لَيْسَ لِمَلُول مُرُوَّةٌ۔
One who is fed-up has no magnanimity.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: One Who Is Fed-Up)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لَيْسَ لِمَلُول مُرُوَّةٌ۔" This can be translated into English as,
One who is fed-up has no magnanimity.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying in light of the Quran.
The word (malool) "مَلُول" in this Hadith refers to someone who is disheartened, weary, or fed-up. It signifies a state of emotional exhaustion and a lack of motivation. On the other hand, the term (murawah) "مُرُوَّةٌ" refers to magnanimity, nobility, and generosity of character. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the fact that these two qualities cannot coexist within an individual.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, the believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of unwavering faith and dedication in the path of Allah. It teaches us that true believers are those who do not waver in their commitment, even in the face of challenges and difficulties.
When a person becomes fed-up or disheartened, their motivation and dedication towards a cause diminish. They may lose sight of their goals and become complacent in their efforts. This lack of magnanimity hinders their ability to strive in the cause of Allah and fulfill their responsibilities as believers.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:54), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion - Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people He will love and who will love Him [who are] humble toward the believers, powerful against the disbelievers; they strive in the cause of Allah and do not fear the blame of a critic.
This verse highlights the importance of steadfastness in faith and the need to strive in the cause of Allah. It emphasizes the qualities of humility, strength, and dedication that believers should possess.
When a person becomes fed-up, they may lose their humility and become weak in their faith. They may no longer strive in the cause of Allah and may even fear the criticism or judgment of others. This lack of magnanimity prevents them from fulfilling their duties as believers and from embodying the qualities of true believers described in the Quran.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is reminding us that in order to possess magnanimity and nobility of character, we must guard against becoming disheartened or fed-up. We must remain steadfast in our faith, dedicated in our efforts, and unwavering in our commitment to the path of Allah. Only then can we truly embody the qualities of magnanimity and fulfill our responsibilities as believers.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly renew their intentions, seek motivation from the Quran, and strive to overcome any feelings of weariness or disheartenment. It encourages us to maintain a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and to continuously seek His guidance and support in our journey towards righteousness.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to overcome any feelings of weariness and to embody the qualities of magnanimity and dedication in our lives. May He bless us with unwavering faith and steadfastness in the path of righteousness. Ameen.
