أعْجَزُ النَّاسِ مَنْ عَجَزَ عَنِ الدُّعاءِ۔
The most incapable of all people is the one who is unable to supplicate.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Supplication And The Supplicant)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The most incapable of all people is the one who is unable to supplicate.
This wise utterance emphasizes the importance and power of supplication in the life of a Muslim. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, exploring its significance in light of the Quranic teachings.
The word (ajaza) "عَجَزَ" in Arabic, which is translated as "incapable" in English, refers to a state of weakness, inability, or powerlessness. It implies a deficiency in one's abilities or resources. In this context, it signifies the inability to supplicate or make dua. Supplication, or dua, is an act of calling upon Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for help, guidance, forgiveness, or any other need. It is an essential aspect of worship and a means of seeking closeness to our Creator.
The Hadith highlights the significance of dua in the life of a Muslim. It reminds us that the one who fails to supplicate is the most incapable of all people. This incapability stems from a lack of reliance on Allah and a failure to recognize His infinite power and mercy. By neglecting dua, one deprives themselves of the immense blessings and benefits that come from turning to Allah in humility and seeking His assistance.
The Quranic teachings emphasize the importance of supplication and provide numerous examples of the power of dua. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ghafir (40:60),
And your Lord says, 'Call upon Me; I will respond to you.'
This verse clearly indicates that Allah is always ready to respond to the supplications of His servants. It demonstrates His infinite mercy and willingness to answer the prayers of those who turn to Him sincerely.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:186), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.
This verse assures us that Allah is near and attentive to our prayers. He listens to our supplications and responds to them according to His wisdom and divine plan.
The consequences of neglecting dua are significant. By failing to supplicate, one deprives themselves of the opportunity to seek Allah's guidance, mercy, and blessings. They become disconnected from the source of all power and assistance. This incapability is not physical or material but rather spiritual and emotional. It leads to a sense of emptiness, helplessness, and a lack of fulfillment in one's life.
On the other hand, those who engage in regular supplication experience a profound transformation in their lives. They develop a deep connection with Allah, recognizing His constant presence and guidance. They find solace and comfort in turning to Him during times of difficulty, knowing that He is the ultimate source of support and assistance. Their hearts are filled with gratitude, humility, and trust in Allah's divine plan.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights the significance of supplication in this Hadith. His words serve as a reminder to all Muslims of the importance of dua in our daily lives. We should strive to cultivate a habit of supplicating to Allah, seeking His guidance, forgiveness, and blessings in all aspects of our lives. By doing so, we strengthen our relationship with our Creator and tap into the limitless power and mercy of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of supplication in the life of a Muslim. It highlights the incapability of those who fail to engage in dua and neglect the opportunity to seek Allah's guidance and assistance. By supplicating regularly, we strengthen our connection with Allah and experience the transformative power of turning to Him in humility and trust. May Allah grant us the ability to supplicate sincerely and may He accept our prayers.
