Hadith #8492

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The root of safety from error is thinking before acting, and reflecting before speaking.

This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of careful consideration and contemplation in our actions and words. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (root) "أصْلُ" signifies the fundamental basis or foundation upon which something is built. In this context, it refers to the core principle or key element that leads to safety from error. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights two essential components for attaining this safety. The first is (thinking) "الفِكْرُ" before taking any action. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), Allah says,

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
