اَلْمالُ سُلْوَةُ الوارِثِ (الوُرّاثِ)۔
Wealth is a solace [and comfort] for the heir (or heirs).
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wealth And Riches)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Wealth is a solace [and comfort] for the heir (or heirs).
Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this statement and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (wealth) "مال" in this Hadith refers to material possessions, financial resources, and worldly assets. It encompasses both tangible and intangible forms of wealth, including money, property, possessions, and other valuable resources. Wealth holds a significant place in society, as it provides individuals with the means to fulfill their needs and desires.
The term (solace or comfort) "سُلْوَةُ" signifies the role that wealth plays in bringing ease, tranquility, and contentment to the heir or heirs. It represents the relief and satisfaction that inheriting wealth can bring, as it alleviates financial burdens and provides a sense of security and stability.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) acknowledges the significance of wealth and its role in providing comfort and solace to individuals. In Surah Al-Kahf, Allah says, (Quran 18:46)
Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope
This verse highlights that wealth, along with children, is a form of adornment in this worldly life. It beautifies our existence and brings temporary joy and satisfaction. However, Allah emphasizes that the enduring good deeds are far superior in terms of reward and hope. This implies that while wealth may bring temporary comfort and solace, it is the righteous actions and deeds that hold true value and lasting benefit in the sight of Allah.
Another verse that sheds light on the importance of wealth is found in Surah Al-Imran, where Allah says, (Quran 64:15)
Wealth and children are [but] a trial, and Allah - with Him is a great reward
This verse reminds us that wealth, like children, is a test from Allah. It is a means through which our faith and character are tested. It is a trial that can either lead us astray or serve as a means of attaining closeness to Allah.
Now, let us reflect on the deeper implications of Imam Ali's statement. While wealth can provide comfort and solace to the heirs, it is essential to recognize that this comfort is temporary and fleeting. True solace and contentment can only be found through a balanced approach to wealth, where it is used in accordance with the teachings of Islam and for the betterment of oneself and society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and his statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that wealth should not be the sole focus of our lives. It should not consume us or distract us from our ultimate purpose, which is to worship Allah and seek His pleasure.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the role of wealth as a solace and comfort for the heirs. However, it is crucial for Muslims to maintain a balanced approach to wealth, recognizing its temporary nature and using it in accordance with the teachings of Islam. True solace and contentment can only be attained through righteous actions and deeds that are pleasing to Allah. May Allah guide us to use our wealth wisely and grant us the ability to find solace and comfort in His remembrance and obedience.
