(Ghurar al-Hikam: Readiness And Preparation)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

خَيْرُ الاِسْتِعْدادِ ما أُصْلِحَ بِهِ المَعادُ۔

This can be translated as,

The best preparation is that by which one's Hereafter is improved.

Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (istia'dad) "اِسْتِعْدادِ" in this Hadith refers to preparation or readiness. It implies the actions and efforts one undertakes to ensure a successful outcome in the future. The word (ma'ad) "مَعادُ" refers to the Hereafter, the ultimate destination and eternal life after death.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of preparing for the Hereafter. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:197)

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse highlights that the best preparation for the Hereafter is to cultivate piety and consciousness of Allah in our hearts and actions.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hashr, Allah states, (59:7)

And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows.

This verse emphasizes the importance of physical preparation and readiness in times of conflict. However, it is important to note that the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) specifically refers to the preparation that improves one's Hereafter, which encompasses both the physical and spiritual aspects of our lives.

The Hadith teaches us that the best form of preparation is one that leads to the improvement of our Hereafter. This implies that our actions and efforts in this world should be directed towards earning the pleasure of Allah and securing our place in Paradise. It encourages us to prioritize our spiritual growth and righteousness over worldly pursuits.

For example, if we are preparing for a job interview, the best preparation would be to seek Allah's guidance, perform sincere prayers, and rely on His help. This aligns with the Quranic verse, (3:159)

And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

By seeking Allah's assistance and relying on Him, we are not only preparing for the worldly outcome but also ensuring that our actions are in accordance with His guidance.

Similarly, if we are preparing for marriage, the best preparation would be to seek a spouse who shares our values and commitment to the Hereafter. This aligns with the Quranic verse, (30:21)

And among His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought.

By prioritizing the Hereafter in our choice of a life partner, we are laying the foundation for a harmonious and spiritually fulfilling marriage.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the best preparation is one that leads to the improvement of our Hereafter. It reminds us to prioritize our spiritual growth and righteousness in all aspects of our lives. By aligning our actions with the guidance of the Quran and seeking Allah's pleasure, we can ensure that our preparations in this world are in line with our ultimate goal of attaining success in the Hereafter. May Allah guide us all in our preparations and grant us success in both this world and the Hereafter.
