اَلْحَياءُ خُلْقٌ جَمِيلٌ۔
Modesty is a beautiful quality.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Modesty And Shame)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "Al-haya'u khulqun jamil." This can be translated as,
Modesty is a beautiful quality.
Modesty, or haya, is a fundamental aspect of Islamic teachings that holds great significance in the lives of Muslims.
The word "haya" in Arabic refers to a sense of modesty, shyness, and humility. It encompasses a range of virtues, including decency, bashfulness, and a sense of shame. Modesty is not limited to one's outward appearance or behavior, but it also encompasses one's inner thoughts, intentions, and interactions with others.
The importance of modesty is emphasized in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 24:31)
And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not display their adornment except that which appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not display their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
This verse highlights the importance of modesty in the behavior and appearance of both men and women. It encourages believers to lower their gaze, guard their private parts, and not display their adornment except to those mentioned in the verse. This emphasizes the need for modesty in our interactions with others and the importance of preserving our dignity and chastity.
Furthermore, the Quran states, (Quran 7:26)
O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember.
This verse reminds us that while clothing serves the purpose of covering our bodies, the true beauty lies in righteousness and modesty. It encourages us to adorn ourselves with the virtues of modesty, humility, and righteousness, which are far more valuable than any external adornment.
Imam Ali's statement,
Modesty is a beautiful quality,
reflects the profound wisdom and insight he possessed. Modesty is not only a reflection of one's character but also a means to attain spiritual elevation. It is a quality that safeguards one's dignity, promotes humility, and fosters a sense of respect and honor in society.
When individuals embody modesty, they become conscious of their actions and words. They are careful not to engage in behavior that may harm themselves or others. Modesty cultivates a sense of self-awareness and accountability, leading to a more righteous and virtuous life.
Modesty also plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy relationships and fostering a harmonious society. When individuals practice modesty in their interactions, they show respect for others' boundaries, honor their privacy, and promote a culture of decency and mutual respect.
Moreover, modesty acts as a shield against arrogance and pride. It reminds us that all blessings and accomplishments are from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and should be used for the betterment of society. Modesty keeps us grounded and prevents us from becoming consumed by our own ego.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of modesty as a beautiful quality. Modesty encompasses both inward and outward aspects of one's character, promoting humility, righteousness, and respect for others. It is a quality that is deeply rooted in Islamic teachings and is exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), the Ahl al-Bayt, and the noble companions. By embodying modesty, Muslims can strive towards spiritual growth, maintain healthy relationships, and contribute to a more harmonious society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us all with the ability to cultivate and embody this beautiful quality of modesty.
