اَلفاجِرُ مُجاهِرٌ۔
The wicked is one who declares [his sins] openly.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wickedness And Immorality)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الفاجرُ مُجاهِرٌ۔" This can be translated into English as,
The wicked is one who declares [his sins] openly.
To understand the meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the important words and their implications.
The word (al-fajir) "الفاجر" refers to a person who is wicked or sinful. This individual indulges in acts that are contrary to the teachings of Islam and transgresses the boundaries set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). They knowingly and willingly commit sins, showing no remorse or repentance for their actions.
The term (mujahir) "مُجاهِرٌ" refers to someone who openly declares or displays their sins without any shame or hesitation. It is a characteristic of those who not only commit sins but also boast about them, seeking attention and approval for their immoral behavior.
To comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:33),
Say, 'My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know.'
This verse emphasizes the prohibition of immoral actions, whether they are committed openly or in secret. It highlights the importance of avoiding sins, both in public and private, as they are displeasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The wicked individual described in the Hadith is one who not only commits sins but also flaunts them, disregarding the boundaries set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:55), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors.
This verse emphasizes the importance of humility and modesty in worship. It encourages Muslims to turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in private, seeking His forgiveness and guidance. The wicked individual described in the Hadith, on the other hand, openly declares their sins, displaying arrogance and a lack of remorse.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of their actions and to avoid openly declaring their sins. It teaches us that true repentance and seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) should be done in private, with humility and sincerity. By openly boasting about our sins, we not only display a lack of remorse but also encourage others to follow a similar path, leading to a society that is devoid of moral values.
Moreover, this Hadith also highlights the importance of preserving one's reputation and dignity. Islam teaches us to protect our honor and not to expose our sins to others. By openly declaring our sins, we risk tarnishing our reputation and damaging our relationships with others. It is essential to remember that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the All-Forgiving and the Most Merciful, and it is to Him that we should turn in repentance and seek His forgiveness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to refrain from openly declaring their sins. It teaches us the importance of humility, repentance, and seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in private. By avoiding the characteristics of the wicked individual described in the Hadith, we can strive to lead a righteous and morally upright life, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all our actions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the straight path and protect us from falling into sin.
