يَسيرُ الشَّكِّ يُفْسِدُ اليَقينَ۔
The smallest doubt can corrupt certitude.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Doubt And Misgiving)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
يَسيرُ الشَّكِّ يُفْسِدُ اليَقينَ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the detrimental effects of even the smallest doubt on one's certitude. Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding.
The word (shakk) "شَّكِّ" translates to doubt. It refers to a state of uncertainty or hesitation in one's belief or conviction. Doubt can arise from various sources, such as lack of knowledge, conflicting information, or personal biases. It is a state that weakens the firmness of faith and undermines the strength of one's conviction.
On the other hand, (al-yaqeen) "اليَقينَ" refers to certitude or absolute conviction. It is a state of unwavering belief and confidence in the truth. Yaqeen is the opposite of doubt and represents a strong and unshakeable faith.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of certitude and warns against the dangers of doubt.
In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15), Allah says,
إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَرْتَابُوا
which means,
The believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not.
This verse highlights that true believers are those who have complete faith in Allah and His Messenger without any doubt. Doubt weakens the foundation of faith and prevents one from attaining true belief.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:28), Allah says,
which means,
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured.
This verse highlights the importance of remembrance of Allah in strengthening one's heart and increasing certitude. When one constantly remembers Allah and His teachings, their heart becomes tranquil and their faith becomes stronger, leaving no room for doubt.
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that even the smallest doubt can corrupt our certitude. Just as a drop of poison can contaminate a whole glass of water, a tiny seed of doubt can spread and corrupt our entire belief system.
Doubt weakens our connection with Allah and hinders our spiritual growth. It opens the door for skepticism, confusion, and disbelief. It is essential for us as Muslims to be vigilant and guard ourselves against doubt by seeking knowledge, reflecting on the Quran, and strengthening our relationship with Allah through prayer and remembrance.
We must strive to attain a state of unwavering certitude, firmly rooted in the teachings of Islam. This certitude will provide us with the strength and clarity to navigate through the challenges of life, and it will enable us to fulfill our purpose as Muslims.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the destructive nature of doubt and the importance of cultivating certitude in our faith. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to strengthen our belief, protect us from doubt, and guide us on the path of righteousness.
