اَلصِّحَّةُ أفْضَلُ النِّعَمِ۔
Good health is the best blessing.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Health And The Healthy)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الصِّحَّةُ أفْضَلُ النِّعَمِ" which translates to
Good health is the best blessing.
In this enlightening saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense value and significance of good health in our lives.
The word (sihhah) "صِّحَّةُ" refers to physical well-being and soundness. It encompasses not only the absence of illness or disease but also the presence of vitality, strength, and overall wellness. It is a state of being in which all bodily functions are functioning optimally, allowing a person to engage in their daily activities without hindrance.
The word (afdalu) "أفْضَلُ" means the best or the most excellent. It signifies that good health surpasses all other blessings and is of utmost importance in our lives. It is a blessing that enables us to enjoy other blessings and fulfill our duties towards Allah and humanity.
The significance of good health is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:70),
And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.
This verse highlights the honor bestowed upon human beings by Allah and the provisions He has granted them. Among these provisions, good health is undoubtedly one of the greatest blessings.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse encourages us to take care of our physical well-being and not engage in actions that harm our health. It reminds us that maintaining good health is an essential aspect of fulfilling our obligations towards Allah and doing good deeds.
Imam Ali's statement holds profound wisdom and practical implications. Good health enables us to worship Allah, fulfill our responsibilities, and contribute positively to society. It allows us to perform acts of worship such as prayer, fasting, and pilgrimage with ease and devotion. It empowers us to engage in charitable deeds, help those in need, and actively participate in community service.
Moreover, good health has a direct impact on our mental and spiritual well-being. When we are physically healthy, we are more likely to have a positive mindset, be emotionally stable, and have a stronger connection with Allah. It enables us to focus on our spiritual growth, seek knowledge, and engage in acts of remembrance and supplication.
Conversely, when we neglect our health or fall ill, our ability to fulfill our obligations and contribute to society is compromised. Illness can hinder our productivity, limit our mobility, and cause distress. It can also lead to financial burdens, strain relationships, and disrupt our overall well-being.
Therefore, it is incumbent upon us as Muslims to prioritize and take care of our health. We should adopt a balanced lifestyle that includes regular physical exercise, a nutritious diet, adequate rest, and seeking medical care when needed. By doing so, we not only preserve the blessing of good health but also fulfill our duty towards ourselves, our families, and society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the immense value of good health as the best blessing. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which highlight the honor bestowed upon human beings and the importance of taking care of our physical well-being. By recognizing the significance of good health and actively striving to maintain it, we can lead fulfilling lives, fulfill our obligations towards Allah and humanity, and strive for spiritual growth. May Allah grant us all good health and enable us to appreciate and preserve this precious blessing.
