قَدْرُ المَرْءِ عَلى قَدْرِ فَضْلِهِ۔
A person’s worth is based on the extent of his merit.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Human Being)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
قَدْرُ المَرْءِ عَلى قَدْرِ فَضْلِهِ۔
This can be translated as,
A person's worth is based on the extent of his merit.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (qadr) "قَدْرُ" in this Hadith refers to the worth or value of a person. It encompasses the individual's qualities, abilities, and achievements. It is a measure of their excellence and virtue. The word (fadl) "فَضْلِهِ" refers to the merit or superiority of a person. It signifies their outstanding qualities, knowledge, and actions that distinguish them from others.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of merit and excellence. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah says,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights that true worth and nobility are not based on lineage, wealth, or social status. Rather, it is determined by righteousness and piety. Those who possess knowledge, wisdom, and good deeds are considered to be the most honorable in the sight of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:70), Allah says,
And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.
This verse emphasizes that Allah has bestowed His blessings upon humanity and has honored them above other creations. This honor is not based on physical attributes or material possessions, but rather on the potential for spiritual growth and righteousness.
When we reflect on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that a person's worth is not determined by external factors such as wealth, beauty, or social status. Instead, it is based on their merit, which includes their knowledge, wisdom, piety, and good deeds.
For example, if a person possesses extensive knowledge and uses it to benefit others, their worth is elevated. Similarly, if an individual demonstrates exemplary character and conducts themselves with integrity and compassion, their worth increases. Conversely, if a person lacks knowledge, wisdom, and good deeds, their worth diminishes.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives. It encourages us to acquire knowledge, develop good character, and perform righteous deeds. By doing so, we increase our worth and draw closer to Allah's pleasure.
Moreover, this Hadith also highlights the importance of recognizing and appreciating the merits and virtues of others. It reminds us not to judge individuals solely based on external appearances or worldly possessions. Instead, we should value and respect individuals based on their knowledge, piety, and contributions to society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that a person's worth is determined by their merit and excellence. It emphasizes the importance of knowledge, wisdom, piety, and good deeds in elevating one's worth in the sight of Allah. As Muslims, we should strive to acquire knowledge, develop good character, and perform righteous deeds to increase our worth and draw closer to Allah's pleasure. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us success in this life and the Hereafter.
