Hadith #3177

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Sincerity is the foundation of worship.

This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the importance of having pure intentions and sincerity in our acts of worship. To better understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words.

The word (ikhlas) "إخْلاص" translates to "sincerity" in English. It refers to the act of performing an action solely for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), without any ulterior motives or desires for worldly gain. Ikhlas is the essence of worship, as it purifies our intentions and elevates our acts to a higher spiritual level.

The term (milak) "مِلاكُ" can be translated as "foundation" or "basis." It signifies the fundamental principle upon which something is built. Just as a building relies on a strong foundation for stability and longevity, our worship relies on sincerity for its acceptance and effectiveness.

To further understand the significance of sincerity in worship, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Bayyinah (98:5),

And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.

This verse emphasizes that sincerity is a fundamental requirement in worship. It highlights that our acts of worship should be solely dedicated to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), without any association of partners or seeking of worldly recognition. True worship is rooted in sincerity, as it reflects our devotion to Allah alone.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Unquestionably, for Allah is the pure religion. And those who take protectors besides Him [say], 'We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position.' Indeed, Allah will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allah does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever.

This verse warns against the practice of associating partners with Allah in worship. It emphasizes that true worship should be directed solely towards Allah, without seeking intermediaries or relying on others for closeness to Him. Sincerity in worship entails recognizing that Allah alone is the ultimate source of guidance, and seeking His pleasure above all else.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that sincerity is not only a prerequisite for the acceptance of our worship, but it also has profound implications for our spiritual growth and development.
