مَنْ عَجِلَ نَدِمَ عَلَى العَجَلِ۔
One who is hasty regrets his haste.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Haste And The Hasty)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ عَجِلَ نَدِمَ عَلَى العَجَلِ۔
This can be translated as,
One who is hasty regrets his haste.
Let us delve into the profound wisdom behind this statement and explore its implications in the light of the Quran.
The word (ajila) "عَجِلَ" in this Hadith refers to being hasty or rushing into actions without proper consideration or reflection. It is a characteristic that can lead to regret and negative consequences. The word (nadima) "نَدِمَ" means to feel remorse or regret. Thus, the Hadith warns against the negative outcomes of acting impulsively and without due thought.
The Quran provides us with guidance on the importance of patience, wisdom, and reflection in our actions. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:200),
O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.
This verse emphasizes the need for patience and perseverance in our endeavors, as rushing into things can lead to failure and regret.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:56), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,
And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.
This verse highlights the importance of not causing harm or corruption through impulsive actions. It encourages us to invoke Allah with fear and hope, seeking His guidance and mercy before making decisions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims to exercise patience and thoughtfulness in their actions. By rushing into things without proper consideration, we risk making mistakes and facing the consequences of our impulsive choices. This can apply to various aspects of life, such as relationships, business decisions, or even matters of faith.
For example, when it comes to relationships, rushing into a marriage without taking the time to truly understand and know the other person can lead to regret and unhappiness later on. Similarly, making impulsive financial decisions without careful planning and consideration can result in financial difficulties and regret.
In matters of faith, haste can lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations. It is important to approach the teachings of Islam with patience, seeking knowledge and understanding from reliable sources. Rushing to form judgments or opinions without proper study and reflection can lead to misguided beliefs and regret.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we are reminded of the importance of taking our time, seeking guidance from Allah, and making informed decisions. By exercising patience and wisdom, we can avoid the pitfalls of haste and minimize the chances of regret in our lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a valuable reminder for Muslims to avoid hasty actions and decisions. It emphasizes the need for patience, reflection, and seeking guidance from Allah. By doing so, we can navigate through life with wisdom and avoid the regret that comes with impulsive choices. May Allah grant us the ability to act with patience and wisdom in all aspects of our lives.
