مَنْ مَلَكَهُ الهَوى لَمْ يَقْبَلْ مِنْ نَصُوح نُصُحاً۔
One who is controlled by vain desire does not accept the advice of any sincere adviser.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Man malakahul hawa lam yaqbal min nasuhih nasuha.
This Hadith highlights the detrimental effects of being controlled by one's vain desires, which prevents a person from accepting sincere advice. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word "malakahul hawa" refers to being controlled or dominated by vain desires. It implies that when a person becomes a slave to their whims and desires, they lose the ability to think rationally and make sound decisions. Such a person becomes blinded by their own desires, leading them astray from the path of righteousness.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in the Quran about the dangers of following our desires. In Surah Al-Jathiyah (45:23), Allah says,
Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah? Then will you not be reminded?
This verse emphasizes that those who prioritize their desires over the guidance of Allah will be led astray and deprived of true knowledge and guidance.
The second part of the Hadith mentions the consequence of being controlled by vain desires, which is the rejection of sincere advice. When a person is consumed by their own desires, they become resistant to any counsel or guidance that contradicts their whims. They are unable to accept sincere advice because it challenges their ego and threatens their self-indulgence.
The Quran provides numerous examples of individuals who rejected sincere advice due to their attachment to their desires. One such example is the story of Pharaoh in Surah Yunus (10:90-91). Despite receiving sincere advice from his own people, Pharaoh arrogantly rejected it due to his desire for power and control. His refusal to accept guidance ultimately led to his downfall and destruction.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of the influence of their desires. It urges us to prioritize the guidance of Allah and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) over our own whims and desires. By doing so, we can remain open to sincere advice and benefit from the wisdom and guidance of others.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to cultivate self-awareness and self-control. We must constantly evaluate our intentions and actions, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam. By purifying our hearts from the dominance of vain desires, we can become receptive to sincere advice and grow in our journey towards righteousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the dangers of being controlled by vain desires and the subsequent rejection of sincere advice. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the guidance of Allah and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) over their own whims and desires. By doing so, we can remain open to sincere advice and strive towards righteousness. May Allah protect us from the influence of our desires and grant us the ability to accept sincere counsel.
