مَنْ لَمْ يُعِنْهُ اللّهُ عَلى نَفْسِهِ لَمْ يَنْتَفِعْ بِمَوْعِظَةِ واعِظ۔
One whom Allah does not help [to fight] against his [carnal] soul will not benefit from the advice of the adviser.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of seeking Allah's assistance in the struggle against one's own carnal desires. The key words in this Hadith are (Allah helps him) "يُعِنْهُ اللّهُ" and (the advice of the adviser) "مَوْعِظَةِ واعِظ".
The word (helps him) "يُعِنْهُ" is derived from the root word "عَوْن" which means assistance or support. In this context, it refers to the divine assistance that Allah provides to those who sincerely strive to overcome their own desires and inclinations. This divine help is essential because the struggle against one's own self is a constant battle that requires strength, determination, and guidance from Allah.
To understand the significance of seeking Allah's help in this struggle, we can turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah says, (Quran 47:7)
O you who have believed, if you support Allah, He will support you and plant firmly your feet.
This verse highlights the reciprocal nature of seeking Allah's assistance. When we support Allah by obeying His commands and striving to overcome our own desires, He, in turn, supports us and provides us with the strength and stability to face the challenges of life.
Furthermore, the phrase (the advice of the adviser) "مَوْعِظَةِ واعِظ" in the Hadith emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance and counsel from those who possess knowledge and wisdom. In this context, it refers to the advice and guidance of the righteous scholars and spiritual mentors who can help us in our journey of self-improvement.
The Quran also emphasizes the significance of seeking guidance from the people of knowledge. In Surah Al-Anbiya, Allah says, (Quran 21:73)
And We made them leaders guiding by Our command. And We inspired to them the doing of good deeds, establishment of prayer, and giving of zakah; and they were worshippers of Us.
This verse highlights the role of the righteous leaders and scholars who are appointed by Allah to guide the people and inspire them to perform good deeds.
Now, let us reflect on the enlightening message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, is reminding us that without seeking Allah's help and guidance, we cannot benefit from the advice and counsel of even the most knowledgeable and pious individuals. This is because the struggle against our own desires requires divine intervention and support.
When we rely solely on our own strength and intellect, we may fall prey to the temptations of our carnal desires and be unable to implement the advice and guidance we receive. However, when we sincerely seek Allah's assistance, He blesses us with the ability to overcome our weaknesses and implement the wisdom and guidance we receive.
The consequences of not seeking Allah's help in this struggle are grave. We may become complacent and stagnant in our spiritual growth, unable to break free from the shackles of our own desires. Our actions may be driven by selfish motives rather than the pursuit of righteousness. Ultimately, we will fail to benefit from the valuable advice and counsel that is available to us.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for all Muslims to seek Allah's assistance in the struggle against their own carnal desires. It highlights the reciprocal nature of seeking divine help and the importance of relying on Allah's guidance in order to benefit from the wisdom and advice of the righteous. May Allah grant us the strength and determination to seek His assistance and implement the guidance we receive, so that we may attain success in this world and the Hereafter.
