مَوَدَّةُ الأحْمَقِ كَشَجَرَةِ النّارِ، يَأْكُلُ بَعْضُها بَعْضاً۔
The friendship of a fool is like a tree of fire, part of it consumes [its] other parts.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Affection And Friendship)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The friendship of a fool is like a tree of fire, part of it consumes [its] other parts.
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of befriending a foolish person. To fully comprehend the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of its key words.
The term (mawaddatu) "مَوَدَّةُ" refers to friendship or companionship. It signifies a close bond and association between individuals. The word (al-ahmaq) "الأحْمَقِ" translates to a fool or an ignorant person. It refers to someone lacking wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. The phrase (ka shajarat al-nar) "كَشَجَرَةِ النّارِ" is translated as
like a tree of fire.
This metaphorical expression portrays the destructive nature of the friendship being described.
To further elucidate the meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:1),
O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth.
This verse emphasizes the importance of choosing our companions wisely and not forming close bonds with those who oppose the truth.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Kahf (18:28), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) narrates the story of two companions, one of whom was righteous while the other was a disbeliever. The righteous companion advised his friend against their friendship, fearing that it would lead to his own downfall. This story serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the negative consequences of befriending those who lack faith and wisdom.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith draws our attention to the destructive nature of befriending a fool. Just as a tree of fire consumes itself, a foolish friend can bring harm and destruction to those around them. The fool's ignorance and lack of wisdom can lead to misguided advice, poor decision-making, and negative influences. Such a friendship can hinder our spiritual growth, compromise our values, and lead us astray from the path of righteousness.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, warns us against forming close bonds with individuals who lack understanding and insight. He encourages us to seek companionship with those who are wise, knowledgeable, and righteous. Surrounding ourselves with individuals who possess these qualities will not only protect us from harm but also inspire us to grow intellectually, morally, and spiritually.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious in choosing their friends and companions. It urges us to seek the company of those who possess wisdom, knowledge, and righteousness, while avoiding those who lack understanding and insight. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from the destructive consequences of befriending fools and ensure our spiritual growth and well-being. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in forming beneficial and righteous friendships.
