حُسْنُ النِّيَّةِ جَمالُ السَّرائِرِ۔
Good intention is the beauty of the innermost consciences.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Intention)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
حُسْنُ النِّيَّةِ جَمالُ السَّرائِرِ۔
This can be translated as,
Good intention is the beauty of the innermost consciences.
Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us understand the key words in this Hadith. "حُسْنُ النِّيَّةِ" refers to "good intention" or "pure motive." It signifies the sincerity and purity of one's intentions when performing an action. "جَمالُ السَّرائِرِ" translates to
beauty of the innermost consciences.
It refers to the internal beauty and righteousness that emanates from a person's heart and soul.
The Quran emphasizes the significance of intention in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 98:5)
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.
This verse highlights the importance of sincerity in worship, indicating that true devotion to Allah can only be achieved through pure intentions.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 60:8)
Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse emphasizes the importance of having good intentions and treating others with justice and fairness, regardless of their beliefs or actions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the profound connection between intention and the innermost conscience. It teaches us that the beauty of our actions lies in the purity of our intentions. When our motives are sincere and righteous, our actions become a reflection of our inner beauty and spirituality.
For example, if a person donates money to a charitable cause solely to gain recognition or praise from others, their intention is tainted by ego and self-interest. However, if the same person donates with the intention of helping those in need and seeking the pleasure of Allah, their action becomes a manifestation of their inner beauty and devotion.
Furthermore, the Hadith reminds us that our intentions have far-reaching consequences. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 50:16)
And We have certainly created man and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.
This verse highlights that Allah is aware of our innermost thoughts and intentions. Therefore, it is crucial for us to purify our intentions and strive for sincerity in all our actions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to constantly evaluate their intentions and strive for purity in their actions. It teaches us that true beauty lies not in external appearances, but in the righteousness and sincerity of our intentions. By cultivating good intentions, we can enhance the beauty of our innermost consciences and strengthen our connection with Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of good intentions and their impact on our innermost consciences. It aligns with the Quranic teachings that highlight the significance of sincerity and righteousness in all aspects of our lives. As Muslims, let us strive to purify our intentions, seeking the pleasure of Allah in all our actions, and thereby beautify our inner selves. May Allah guide us to have pure intentions and grant us the ability to manifest the beauty of our innermost consciences.
