(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "سَبَبُ المَحَبَّةِ الإحْسانُ" which translates to

The cause of affection is benevolence.

This short but profound statement holds a deep meaning that can be further understood and explored in light of the Quran.

The word (affection) "مَحَبَّة" refers to a deep and sincere love that is rooted in the heart. It is a feeling of warmth, care, and attachment towards someone or something. The word (benevolence) "إحْسان" refers to acts of kindness, goodness, and excellence. It encompasses all forms of virtuous behavior, whether it be in words, actions, or intentions.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of benevolence and its role in fostering love and affection among people. Allah says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse highlights the diversity of humanity and encourages us to embrace and understand one another. It teaches us that the basis for superiority and nobility lies in righteousness and piety. When we treat others with kindness, respect, and benevolence, we create an environment that fosters love and affection.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195), Allah says,

And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse emphasizes the importance of performing acts of goodness and benevolence. It reminds us that Allah loves those who engage in acts of kindness and generosity. When we consistently practice benevolence, we not only earn the love and affection of Allah but also of those around us.

Imam Ali's statement,

The cause of affection is benevolence,

serves as a reminder for us as Muslims to prioritize acts of kindness and goodness in our interactions with others. When we approach others with benevolence, we create an atmosphere of love, understanding, and compassion. Our actions have the power to touch hearts, build bridges, and strengthen relationships.

For example, when we show kindness to our family members, neighbors, colleagues, and even strangers, we are sowing the seeds of affection. Small acts of benevolence such as a smile, a helping hand, a kind word, or a charitable deed can have a profound impact on others. These acts create a ripple effect, spreading love and affection throughout society.

Conversely, when we neglect or mistreat others, we create a breeding ground for animosity, resentment, and discord. The Quran warns us against such behavior and encourages us to strive for unity, harmony, and love. Allah says in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:8),

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse reminds us that even in times of disagreement or conflict, we should strive to be just and fair. Our benevolence should extend to all, regardless of their beliefs or actions towards us. By doing so, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also pave the way for reconciliation, understanding, and the cultivation of affection.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's statement,

The cause of affection is benevolence,

is a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize acts of kindness, goodness, and excellence in our interactions with others. By embodying the principles of benevolence, we create an environment that fosters love, understanding, and compassion. Let us strive to be people of benevolence, spreading affection and building strong bonds within our communities. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in embodying the teachings of the Quran and the noble example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
