اَلْعِلْمُ رُشْدٌ لِمَنْ عَمِلَ بِهِ۔
Knowledge is a [means of] right guidance for the one who acts upon it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
العلم رشد لمن عمل به
which translates to
Knowledge is a [means of] right guidance for the one who acts upon it.
This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of knowledge and its practical application in leading a righteous and guided life.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (knowledge) "علم" refers to the acquisition of information, understanding, and wisdom. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. Knowledge is not limited to theoretical understanding but also includes its practical implementation in one's actions.
The term (right guidance) "رشد" signifies the path of righteousness, moral uprightness, and guidance towards what is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It implies following the correct course of action based on knowledge and wisdom. Right guidance leads to spiritual growth, personal development, and a harmonious society.
To further elucidate the significance of knowledge and its practical application, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),
Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who lack it. Those who have knowledge are more likely to remember and understand the teachings of Allah, enabling them to live a guided life.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:190-191), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], 'Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'
These verses emphasize the importance of pondering over the signs of Allah's creation and recognizing His wisdom and purpose behind them. Such contemplation requires knowledge and understanding, leading to a deeper connection with Allah and a righteous way of life.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the inseparable relationship between knowledge and action. Merely possessing knowledge is not sufficient; it must be put into practice. Knowledge serves as a guiding light, illuminating the path of righteousness and enabling individuals to make informed decisions and choices in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
When knowledge is acted upon, it leads to positive consequences. It shapes our thoughts, beliefs, and actions, allowing us to navigate through life's challenges with wisdom and integrity. Acting upon knowledge helps us avoid sins and harmful behaviors, and instead, encourages us to engage in acts of worship, kindness, and justice. It empowers us to make choices that align with the teachings of Islam, leading to personal growth, spiritual fulfillment, and the betterment of society.
Conversely, neglecting to act upon knowledge can have detrimental consequences. It can lead to ignorance, confusion, and deviation from the right path. Without the practical application of knowledge, one may fall into error, engage in sinful actions, and distance themselves from the mercy and guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of knowledge and its practical application in guiding our lives. Knowledge is not merely an intellectual pursuit but a means of attaining right guidance and righteousness. By acting upon knowledge, we align ourselves with the teachings of Islam, leading to personal growth, spiritual fulfillment, and a righteous way of life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and implement it in our lives.
