كُفْرُالنِّعْمَةِ لُؤْمٌ، وصُحْبَةُ الأحْمَقِ شُؤْمٌ۔
Ungratefulness for a blessing is vileness, and accompanying a fool is [a cause of] misfortune.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Ingratitude)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
Ungratefulness for a blessing is vileness, and accompanying a fool is [a cause of] misfortune.
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights two important aspects of human behavior and relationships.
Firstly, let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. "Kufrun-ni'mah" refers to ungratefulness or disbelief in the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It signifies a lack of appreciation and recognition for the countless favors and bounties that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us. "Lu'm" means vileness or wickedness, indicating the moral degradation and spiritual harm that ungratefulness brings upon an individual.
The second part of the Hadith states, "Wa sohbatus-ahmaq shu'mun." Here, "sohbah" refers to companionship or association, while "ahmaq" denotes a fool or an ignorant person. This part of the Hadith warns against the detrimental consequences of keeping the company of foolish individuals. It highlights the negative impact that such associations can have on one's character, intellect, and overall well-being.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of gratitude and appreciation for His blessings. In Surah Ibrahim (14:7), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse highlights the correlation between gratitude and an increase in blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we fail to recognize and express gratitude for the blessings in our lives, we risk losing them or diminishing their value. Ungratefulness is not only a moral failing but also a rejection of Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) favors upon us.
Similarly, the Quran warns against the company of foolish individuals. In Surah Al-An'am (6:68), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people.
This verse advises us to distance ourselves from those who engage in offensive or ignorant conversations about the verses of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Associating with such individuals can lead to the adoption of their misguided beliefs and behaviors, causing harm to our faith and spiritual well-being.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It urges us to recognize the importance of expressing gratitude and acknowledging the source of all blessings. By doing so, we not only fulfill our duty as servants of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) but also safeguard ourselves from falling into the trap of ungratefulness, which leads to moral degradation and spiritual harm.
Furthermore, this Hadith cautions us against the company of foolish individuals. It reminds us of the influence that our companions have on our character and actions. Just as good company can elevate us and inspire us to righteousness, associating with fools can lead to negative consequences. Their ignorance and misguided behavior can impact our own intellect, decision-making, and overall spiritual growth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and to be mindful of the company we keep. It encourages us to reflect on our own behavior and associations, ensuring that we strive for gratitude and seek the companionship of the wise and righteous. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to recognize His blessings and choose our companions wisely.
