أحْسَنُ الجُودِ عَفْوٌ بَعْدَ مَقْدُرَة۔
The best generosity is to forgive after gaining the upper hand.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Generosity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
أحْسَنُ الجُودِ عَفْوٌ بَعْدَ مَقْدُرَة۔
This can be translated as,
The best generosity is to forgive after gaining the upper hand.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (ahsanu) "أحْسَنُ" means the best or the most excellent. It signifies the highest level of goodness and virtue. The term (al-jood) "الجُودِ" refers to generosity, magnanimity, and the act of giving abundantly. (afwun) "عَفْوٌ" means forgiveness, pardoning, and letting go of any resentment or revenge. Finally, (ba'da) "بَعْدَ" means after, indicating that forgiveness should be offered once the upper hand has been gained.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of forgiveness in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.
This verse highlights the significance of seeking forgiveness from Allah, as He is the ultimate forgiver of sins. It also emphasizes the need to refrain from persisting in wrongdoing once we are aware of our mistakes.
Another verse that supports the concept of forgiveness is found in Surah Al-A'raf (7:199), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.
This verse encourages us to respond to ignorance and wrongdoing with kindness and forgiveness, rather than retaliation or revenge. It teaches us to rise above negative emotions and to respond with generosity and forgiveness.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the excellence of forgiveness, especially when one has the upper hand or the power to seek revenge. It is easy to retaliate and seek retribution when we have the advantage, but true generosity lies in forgiving and letting go. This act of forgiveness not only displays our moral character but also promotes harmony and reconciliation among individuals and communities.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. He understood the power of forgiveness and its ability to heal wounds and mend relationships. By forgiving others, we release ourselves from the burden of anger and resentment. We free our hearts and minds from negative emotions, allowing us to focus on personal growth and spiritual development.
Moreover, forgiveness has far-reaching consequences. It fosters an environment of compassion, understanding, and unity. When we forgive others, we inspire them to reflect on their actions and seek forgiveness themselves. This cycle of forgiveness can lead to the transformation of individuals and communities, promoting peace and harmony in society.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith teaches us the importance of forgiveness as the highest form of generosity. It encourages us to let go of resentment and seek reconciliation, even when we have the upper hand. By forgiving others, we emulate the qualities of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), who is the ultimate forgiver. Let us strive to embody this noble trait and create a world filled with forgiveness, compassion, and unity. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to forgive and seek forgiveness.
