اَلْفَهْمُ بِالفِطْنَةِ۔
Understanding is [achieved] though intelligence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Understanding)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the seal of the Prophets, Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الفهم بالفطنة" which translates to
Understanding is achieved through intelligence.
This concise statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds great wisdom and significance for Muslims of all backgrounds.
To fully comprehend the depth of this statement, let us first explore the meanings of the key words used. (al-fahm) "الفهم" refers to the ability to comprehend, grasp, and perceive knowledge or concepts. It encompasses both intellectual and intuitive understanding. (bil-fatinah) "بالفطنة" refers to intelligence, astuteness, and discernment. It implies the ability to think critically, analyze situations, and make sound judgments.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of intellect and understanding. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:190)
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding
This verse highlights the role of intellect in recognizing the signs of Allah's creation and the importance of pondering over them.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 8:29)
O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty
This verse indicates that through the fear of Allah and the pursuit of knowledge, one can attain a criterion, which is the ability to differentiate between right and wrong, truth and falsehood.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes the importance of intelligence in acquiring understanding. Intelligence is not limited to mere academic knowledge, but rather encompasses the ability to think critically, analyze situations, and make informed decisions. It is through the application of intelligence that one can truly comprehend the deeper meanings and implications of knowledge.
For example, when faced with a moral dilemma, a person with intelligence will consider the ethical implications, weigh the consequences, and make a decision based on sound judgment. Similarly, when studying religious texts, a person with intelligence will delve beyond the surface meanings, explore the context, and extract the underlying wisdom.
The consequences of understanding through intelligence are profound. It enables individuals to navigate the complexities of life, make informed choices, and contribute positively to society. It empowers Muslims to uphold the principles of justice, compassion, and righteousness in their personal and collective lives.
Moreover, understanding through intelligence fosters a deeper connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). As Muslims, we are encouraged to reflect upon the signs of Allah's creation and ponder over the verses of the Quran. Through the application of intelligence, we can gain a deeper appreciation of Allah's wisdom, mercy, and guidance.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,
Understanding is achieved through intelligence,
serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate their intellect, think critically, and seek knowledge. It highlights the importance of applying intelligence in acquiring a profound understanding of religious teachings, moral values, and the complexities of life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to comprehend through intelligence and guide us on the path of wisdom and understanding.
