Injustice is a crime that cannot be forgotten.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الظلم جرم لا ينسى

which translates to

Injustice is a crime that cannot be forgotten.

This impactful Hadith highlights the gravity of injustice and its everlasting impact on individuals and society.

The word (zulm) "ظلم" in this Hadith refers to any form of oppression, wrongdoing, or injustice. It encompasses actions that violate the rights of others, whether it be through physical harm, verbal abuse, or unfair treatment. Zulm is a grave sin in Islam and is condemned by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the Quran.

Allah says in Surah Al-An'am (6:160),

And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.

This verse emphasizes that every act of injustice, no matter how small, will be accounted for and will have consequences. It serves as a reminder that no injustice goes unnoticed by Allah, and He will ensure justice is served.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:81), Allah warns,

And say: 'Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.'

This verse highlights the transient nature of falsehood and injustice. Although injustice may prevail temporarily, it is destined to be eradicated by the truth. This reassures Muslims that justice will ultimately prevail, even if it takes time.

Imam Ali's statement emphasizes the lasting impact of injustice. It serves as a reminder to Muslims that the effects of injustice are not easily forgotten or erased. Injustice leaves deep scars on individuals and communities, leading to a breakdown of trust, resentment, and social unrest.

For example, if a ruler oppresses his subjects, denying them their basic rights and freedoms, the consequences can be severe. The oppressed individuals may harbor feelings of anger and resentment, leading to social unrest and instability. This can have long-lasting effects on the well-being and progress of a society.

Moreover, the statement of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a motivation for Muslims to stand against injustice and advocate for justice. It reminds us of our duty to uphold the principles of fairness, equality, and compassion in all aspects of our lives.

As Muslims, we are encouraged to follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad () and the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize justice and fairness. Allah says in Surah An-Nisa (4:135),

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse highlights the importance of standing up for justice, even if it goes against our personal interests or the interests of our loved ones. It reminds us that justice should always prevail, regardless of the circumstances. Muslims are called to be witnesses for Allah and to ensure justice is served in all situations.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of injustice. It motivates Muslims to strive for justice, both in their personal lives and in society at large. It reminds us that Allah is the ultimate judge, and He will hold everyone accountable for their actions. May we always seek justice and strive to eradicate injustice from our lives and the world around us.
