Hadith #3010

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The remoteness of a fool is better than his nearness and his silence is better than his speech.

This profound statement highlights the wisdom and insight of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his deep knowledge and understanding.

Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (bu'd) "بُعْدُ" means "remoteness" or "distance," while (ahmaq) "أحْمَقِ" refers to a "fool" or an "ignorant person." The word (qurbih) "قُرْبِهِ" means "nearness" or "closeness," and (sukutuh) "سُكُوتُهُ" refers to "silence," while (nutqih) "نُطْقِهِ" means "speech" or "utterance."

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:175),

And recite to them the story of him to whom We gave Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of those who went astray.

This verse highlights the importance of distancing oneself from ignorance and falsehood. It is better to be physically distant from a fool, as their ignorance can lead others astray.

Additionally, the Quran emphasizes the significance of silence in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:63), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.

This verse teaches us the virtue of responding to ignorance and harsh words with silence and peace. By remaining silent, one avoids engaging in futile arguments and preserves their own peace of mind.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds great wisdom and practical advice. The remoteness of a fool is preferable because their ignorance and foolishness can have a negative influence on those around them. It is better to maintain a distance from such individuals to protect ourselves from their misguided thoughts and actions.

Similarly, the silence of a fool is better than their speech because their words can be filled with falsehood and ignorance. By remaining silent, one avoids being drawn into their misguided discussions and arguments. Silence is a powerful tool that allows one to maintain their dignity and avoid unnecessary conflicts.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also reminds us of the importance of choosing our company wisely. Surrounding ourselves with knowledgeable and wise individuals helps us grow intellectually and spiritually. It is essential to seek the company of those who possess wisdom and understanding, as their words and actions can have a positive impact on our lives.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the value of remoteness from fools and the virtue of silence over speech.
