اَلفِكْرُ رُشْدٌ، اَلغَفْلَةُ فَقْدٌ۔
Contemplation is [a means to] right guidance, heedlessness is [a cause of] loss.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Thinking And The Thinker)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Contemplation is [a means to] right guidance, heedlessness is [a cause of] loss.
This profound statement highlights the importance of deep thinking and reflection in attaining true guidance, while warning against the dangers of neglecting this crucial aspect of our spiritual journey.
Let us first delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (fikr) "فِكْرُ" refers to contemplation, deep thinking, and reflection. It encompasses the act of pondering over the signs of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the universe and within ourselves, seeking to understand the purpose of our existence and the path to righteousness. On the other hand, (ghaflah) "غَفْلَةُ" signifies heedlessness, negligence, and being unaware of the truth. It refers to a state of being disconnected from the remembrance of Allah and the pursuit of spiritual growth.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of contemplation and reflection as a means to attain guidance and understanding. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hashr (59:21),
Had We sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.
This verse illustrates that even inanimate objects would be affected by the weight and significance of the Quran if they were capable of understanding. It emphasizes the need for human beings to ponder over the divine revelations and extract lessons from them.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:45), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.
This verse highlights the connection between recitation of the Quran, prayer, and the remembrance of Allah. It implies that through contemplation and reflection on the Quranic teachings, one can attain guidance and protection from immoral actions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes that contemplation is a means to attain right guidance. When we engage in deep thinking and reflection, we are able to understand the purpose of our existence, the significance of our actions, and the path to righteousness. Contemplation allows us to connect with the divine wisdom and guidance present in the Quran, enabling us to make informed decisions and live a life in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
On the other hand, heedlessness or negligence leads to loss. When we become disconnected from the remembrance of Allah and fail to reflect upon His signs, we risk losing sight of our purpose and straying from the right path. This loss can manifest in various ways, such as spiritual emptiness, moral decline, and a lack of direction in life.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) enlightening saying serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize contemplation and reflection in their lives. By engaging in deep thinking and pondering over the Quranic teachings, we can attain true guidance and avoid the pitfalls of heedlessness. Let us strive to cultivate a habit of contemplation, seeking to understand the wisdom and guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in every aspect of our lives. May Allah grant us the ability to reflect upon His signs and attain true guidance.
