مَنْ زَهِدَ فِي الدُّنْيا اِسْتَهانَ بِالمَصائِبِ۔
One who renounces [the pleasures of] this world makes light of the tribulations [he faces in it].

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Renunciation Of Worldly Pleasures)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ زَهِدَ فِي الدُّنْيا اِسْتَهانَ بِالمَصائِبِ۔
This can be translated as,
One who renounces [the pleasures of] this world makes light of the tribulations [he faces in it].
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (zahida) "زَهِدَ" means to renounce or detach oneself from worldly desires and attachments. It signifies a state of contentment and detachment from material possessions and worldly pleasures. The word (dunya) "دُّنْيا" refers to the temporal world, the life of this world that is transient and fleeting. Lastly, the word (istahana) "اِسْتَهانَ" means to belittle or make light of something.
To further comprehend the profound wisdom of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:201),
And of them are some who say, 'Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'
This verse highlights the importance of seeking goodness in both this world and the Hereafter. However, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that true renunciation of worldly desires leads to a different perspective on the tribulations we face.
In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse highlights the inevitability of facing trials and tribulations in this worldly life. However, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when one renounces the pleasures of this world, they develop a mindset that allows them to face these tribulations with patience and resilience.
When a person renounces the worldly desires and attachments, they prioritize the eternal life of the Hereafter over the temporary pleasures of this world. Their focus shifts from accumulating material possessions to seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Consequently, when faced with tribulations, they do not become overwhelmed or disheartened. Instead, they understand that these trials are a means of purification and a test of their faith. They recognize that the true value lies in their relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the rewards that await them in the Hereafter.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the importance of renouncing the pleasures of this world. By doing so, one gains a higher level of spiritual enlightenment and a deeper understanding of the purpose of life. This renunciation enables individuals to navigate through the trials and tribulations of this world with a sense of tranquility and inner strength.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when we renounce the pleasures of this world, we develop a mindset that allows us to face the tribulations of life with patience and resilience. By prioritizing the eternal life of the Hereafter over the temporary pleasures of this world, we gain a deeper understanding of the purpose of our existence. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to detach ourselves from the allure of this world and focus on seeking His pleasure.
