Hadith #7137

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لاخَيْرَ في عَقْل لايُقارِنُهُ حِلْمٌ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of combining intellect with forbearance. Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding.

The word (aql) "عَقْل" refers to intellect or intelligence. It is the faculty of reasoning, understanding, and discernment. It is a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that distinguishes humans from other creatures. However, the Hadith highlights that intellect alone is not sufficient for goodness. It must be accompanied by (hilm) "حِلْم", which translates to forbearance, patience, and tolerance.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of combining intellect with forbearance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 17:37)

And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.

This verse reminds us of the need for humility and patience, even when we possess great intellect or power. It teaches us that true wisdom lies in recognizing our limitations and not being arrogant or haughty.

Another verse that supports the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hujurat, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 49:11)

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames.

This verse emphasizes the importance of forbearance and patience in our interactions with others. It reminds us not to belittle or mock others based on their intellect or abilities, as they may possess virtues that we lack.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder that true wisdom is not merely about knowledge or intelligence, but also about how we use that knowledge. It highlights the importance of having a balanced approach to life, where intellect is tempered by forbearance.

For example, a person may possess great intellectual capabilities, but if they lack forbearance, they may use their intelligence to manipulate or harm others. On the other hand, a person who combines intellect with forbearance will use their knowledge and understanding to benefit others, to resolve conflicts peacefully, and to promote justice and harmony in society.

Furthermore, the combination of intellect and forbearance enables us to navigate the challenges and complexities of life with wisdom and grace. It allows us to approach difficult situations with patience and understanding, rather than reacting impulsively or harshly. It helps us to empathize with others, to listen to different perspectives, and to find peaceful resolutions to conflicts.
