كَيْفَ يَعْرِفُ غَيْرَهُ مَنْ يَجْهَلُ نَفْسَهُ؟!
How can one know others when he is ignorant of himself?!
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Cognizant)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
كَيْفَ يَعْرِفُ غَيْرَهُ مَنْ يَجْهَلُ نَفْسَهُ؟!
which translates to,
How can one know others when he is ignorant of himself?!
This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of self-awareness and self-reflection in our journey of understanding others.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ya'rif) "يَعْرِفُ" means "to know" or "to recognize." (ghayrah) "غَيْرَهُ" refers to "others" or "those besides oneself." (man) "مَنْ" signifies "who" or "whom." (yajhalu) "يَجْهَلُ" means "to be ignorant" or "to lack knowledge." And finally, (nafsahu) "نَفْسَهُ" refers to "oneself" or "one's own self."
To support the exegesis of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of self-reflection in Surah Al-Hashr, verse 19:
And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient.
This verse highlights the consequence of forgetting oneself, which leads to disobedience and a lack of self-awareness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 13, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes the importance of knowing and understanding one another, which can only be achieved through self-awareness and self-knowledge.
Now, let us reflect on the enlightening message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The Imam is reminding us that true knowledge and understanding of others can only be attained when we have a deep understanding of ourselves. When we are ignorant of our own strengths, weaknesses, biases, and emotions, it becomes impossible to truly comprehend and empathize with others.
Self-awareness allows us to recognize our own limitations, biases, and prejudices. It enables us to approach others with humility, empathy, and an open mind. By understanding our own struggles, fears, and desires, we can better relate to the experiences and emotions of those around us. This self-reflection helps us build stronger relationships, resolve conflicts, and foster a more compassionate and inclusive society.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to engage in continuous self-reflection and self-improvement. By seeking knowledge about ourselves, we can strive to become better individuals and contribute positively to our communities. It is through this introspection that we can truly understand and connect with others, fostering unity and harmony among Muslims.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and self-reflection in our journey of understanding others. By knowing ourselves, we can develop empathy, compassion, and a deeper understanding of the diverse experiences of those around us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to continuously strive for self-improvement and to foster unity within the Muslim ummah.
