Indeed, one of the blessings is affluence, but good health is better than affluence, and the God-wariness of the heart is [even] better than good health.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Blessing)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad () and his purified progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, as well as his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the hierarchy of blessings bestowed by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) upon His servants. The Hadith emphasizes the importance of three key blessings: affluence (sa'at al-mal), good health (sihhat al-badan), and the God-wariness of the heart (taqwa al-qalb).

Starting with the word "sa'at" which means affluence or abundance, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) acknowledges that wealth is indeed a blessing from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). However, he goes on to explain that good health (sihhat) is superior to wealth. This highlights the importance of physical well-being and the ability to carry out acts of worship and fulfill responsibilities in a better manner when one is in good health.

The Hadith culminates in the statement that the God-wariness of the heart (taqwa al-qalb) surpasses both affluence and good health. Taqwa is a comprehensive term in Islam that encompasses consciousness of Allah, piety, and righteousness. It is the essence of a believer's spiritual journey and the key to success in this world and the Hereafter.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of good health and gratitude for His blessings in Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 185:

Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship.

This ayah reminds Muslims of the importance of maintaining good health and well-being as part of Allah's mercy and blessings.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran, Ayah 102, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

This ayah underscores the significance of taqwa in the life of a believer and the ultimate goal of attaining God-wariness in all aspects of one's existence.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) profound Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual well-being and the cultivation of taqwa in their hearts above all else. It teaches us that while worldly blessings such as wealth and health are important, they should not distract us from our ultimate purpose of attaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through piety and righteousness. May we strive to embody the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and seek the highest form of blessing through the God-wariness of our hearts.
