مَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ عَقْلٌ يَزينُهُ لَمْ يَنْبُلْ۔
One who does not have an intellect to adorn him, does not become noble.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who does not have an intellect to adorn him, does not become noble.
This wise utterance emphasizes the importance of intellect and knowledge in elevating one's character and status. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in the light of the Quran.
The word (intellect) "عَقْلٌ" in this Hadith refers to the faculty of reason and understanding bestowed upon human beings by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is through the intellect that we are able to comprehend and differentiate between right and wrong, truth and falsehood. The intellect is a divine gift that enables us to make informed decisions and seek knowledge, leading to personal growth and spiritual development.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of intellect in several verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah says, (8:22)
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.
This verse highlights the significance of utilizing our intellect and reasoning abilities to attain closeness to Allah and avoid being among the spiritually deprived.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah states, (2:164)
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
Here, Allah encourages us to reflect upon the signs of His creation and use our intellect to recognize His existence and appreciate His wisdom.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that true nobility is not merely based on external appearances or material possessions. Rather, it is the adornment of intellect and knowledge that distinguishes a person and elevates their character. An individual who lacks intellectual growth and fails to seek knowledge remains stagnant in their personal development and spiritual journey.
The consequences of neglecting the intellect are evident in various aspects of life. Without intellectual growth, one may fall prey to ignorance, superstitions, and misguided beliefs. This can lead to detrimental consequences not only for the individual but also for society as a whole. Lack of intellect can hinder critical thinking, hinder progress, and perpetuate injustice and oppression.
On the other hand, when one adorns themselves with intellect, they become noble in the true sense. They possess the ability to analyze situations, make informed decisions, and contribute positively to society. Intellectual growth enables individuals to seek knowledge, broaden their horizons, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the importance of intellect throughout his life. His sermons, letters, and teachings are a testament to his profound understanding of various disciplines, including theology, jurisprudence, ethics, and philosophy. His intellectual prowess not only earned him respect and admiration but also played a crucial role in guiding the Muslim ummah during his caliphate.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of intellect and knowledge in attaining true nobility. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize intellectual growth, seek knowledge, and utilize their reasoning abilities to make informed decisions. By adorning ourselves with intellect, we can elevate our character, contribute positively to society, and ultimately seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the wisdom and guidance to adorn ourselves with intellect and become truly noble.
