غَلَبَةُ الشَّهْوَةِ أعْظَمُ هُلْك، ومُِلْكُها أشْرَفُ مُِلْك۔
Being overpowered by lust is the greatest destruction, and controlling it is the most honourable dominance.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lust)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Being overpowered by lust is the greatest destruction, and controlling it is the most honourable dominance.
This thought-provoking saying highlights the significance of self-control and the dangers of succumbing to one's desires.
Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ghalabatu) "غَلَبَةُ" refers to being overpowered or overwhelmed. It signifies the loss of control and surrendering to the overpowering force of one's desires. On the other hand, the word (shahwah) "شَّهْوَةِ" refers to lust or desire, particularly the intense and uncontrollable desires of the lower self.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that being overpowered by lust is the greatest destruction. This emphasizes the destructive nature of unchecked desires. When a person allows their desires to control them, it leads to a downward spiral of moral degradation, spiritual decline, and ultimately, ruin. The consequences of succumbing to lust can be seen in various aspects of life, such as broken families, shattered relationships, and the erosion of personal integrity.
To support this impactful Hadith, we find numerous verses in the Quran that warn against the dangers of unchecked desires. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Yusuf (12:53),
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse acknowledges the inherent inclination towards evil within the human soul, which requires constant vigilance and self-control to overcome.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?
This verse highlights the misguided nature of those who allow their desires to dictate their actions, rather than seeking guidance from Allah.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) also states that controlling lust is the most honorable dominance. This highlights the importance of self-discipline and the ability to resist temptations. When one exercises control over their desires, they demonstrate strength of character, discipline, and a commitment to righteousness.
The Quran provides numerous examples of individuals who displayed this honorable dominance over their desires. Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) serves as an exemplary figure in this regard. Despite facing immense temptation from the wife of his master, he firmly resisted and said, as mentioned in Surah Yusuf (12:24),
He said, 'I seek the refuge of Allah. Indeed, he is my master, who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed.'
This example teaches us that by controlling our desires, we can attain a higher level of spiritual and moral excellence. It allows us to prioritize our values and principles over momentary gratification, leading to a more fulfilling and purposeful life.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the destructive nature of being overpowered by lust and the honor in controlling it. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to exercise self-discipline and strive for mastery over their desires. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from the pitfalls of moral decline and attain a higher level of spiritual excellence. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to overcome our desires and seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives.
