— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Anxiety)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of not becoming anxious or disturbed by the small things that we dislike. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and deep understanding of Islam, advises us to remain calm and composed in the face of such situations. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its essence in light of the Quran.

The word (tajza'u) "تَجزَعُوا" in the Hadith means to become anxious or disturbed. It refers to a state of restlessness and unease that arises within us when we encounter something we dislike. This feeling of discomfort can lead to negative emotions and actions, which can further exacerbate the situation. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to avoid falling into this trap.

The phrase (min qaleel ma akrahakum)

مِنْ قَليلِ مَا أَكْرَهَكُمْ

in the Hadith translates to

in the [face of] little that you dislike.

It refers to the small matters or incidents that may not align with our preferences or desires. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that these minor inconveniences should not be a cause for distress or agitation.

To further understand the wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 216:

But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.

This verse highlights the limited nature of our understanding and the fact that what we dislike may actually be beneficial for us in the long run. Therefore, it is crucial to trust in Allah's wisdom and not let our personal preferences cloud our judgment.

In Surah Ash-Shura, verse 30, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And whatever strikes you of disaster - it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much.

This verse reminds us that the difficulties we face in life are often a consequence of our own actions. Instead of becoming anxious or disturbed by these challenges, we should reflect upon our own deeds and seek forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This perspective helps us maintain a sense of peace and tranquility, even in the face of adversity.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in the Hadith encourages us to adopt a broader perspective and not allow minor dislikes to consume our thoughts and emotions. By remaining calm and composed, we can navigate through life's challenges with grace and resilience. This approach not only benefits us individually but also contributes to a harmonious and peaceful society.

Let us reflect on the profound wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to implement his teachings in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to overcome our anxieties and dislikes, and may He bless us with patience and contentment.
