(Ghurar al-Hikam: Kings And Rulers)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The bane of kings is evil intentions.

This Hadith highlights the detrimental impact of corrupt intentions on the rulers and leaders of society. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (bane) "آفَةُ" refers to something that brings harm, destruction, or ruin. It signifies a negative influence that undermines the well-being and prosperity of individuals or communities. In this context, it refers to the harmful consequences that arise from the actions of kings and rulers.

The term (kings) "المُلُوكِ" encompasses not only monarchs but also those in positions of authority and leadership. It includes individuals who hold power and influence over others, whether in political, social, or economic spheres. The Hadith warns that the actions and intentions of such individuals can have far-reaching consequences.

The phrase (evil intentions) "سُوءُ السَّريرَةِ" refers to the inner thoughts, motives, and intentions of individuals. It emphasizes the importance of having pure and righteous intentions in all aspects of life, especially for those in positions of power. Evil intentions can lead to corruption, oppression, and injustice, ultimately causing harm to both the rulers and the ruled.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of righteous intentions and warns against the consequences of evil intentions.

In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:88-89)

And they say, 'Our hearts are wrapped.' But, in fact, Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, so little is it that they believe. And when there came to them a Book from Allah confirming that which was with them - although before they used to pray for victory against those who disbelieved - but [then] when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in it; so the curse of Allah will be upon the disbelievers.

This verse highlights the evil intentions of the disbelievers who rejected the truth despite knowing it. Their hearts were wrapped in arrogance and disbelief, leading to their ultimate destruction. Similarly, the evil intentions of rulers can lead to their downfall and the suffering of their subjects.

In Surah Al-Qasas, Allah says, (Quran 28:30-32)

And when he [Moses] came to it, he was called from the right side of the valley in a blessed spot - from the tree, 'O Moses, indeed I am Allah, Lord of the worlds.' And [he was told], 'Throw down your staff.' But when he saw it writhing as if it was a snake, he turned in flight and did not return. [Allah said], 'O Moses, approach and fear not. Indeed, you are of the secure. Insert your hand into the opening of your garment; it will come out white, without disease. And draw in your arm close to you [as prevention] from fear, for those are two proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his establishment. Indeed, they have been a people defiantly disobedient.'

This passage narrates the encounter between Prophet Moses (Musa) and Pharaoh. Pharaoh, driven by his evil intentions and arrogance, rejected the signs of Allah and persisted in his tyranny. His evil intentions led to his own destruction and the suffering of his people.

From these Quranic examples, we can infer that evil intentions have dire consequences not only for the individuals harboring them but also for the society at large. When rulers are driven by selfish motives, they neglect the welfare of their subjects, leading to oppression, injustice, and societal decay.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to all Muslims, regardless of their sect, to be mindful of their intentions and actions. It calls upon rulers to prioritize the well-being and justice of their subjects, and it reminds the ruled to hold their leaders accountable for their intentions and actions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns against the destructive consequences of evil intentions on rulers and leaders. It emphasizes the importance of having pure and righteous intentions in all aspects of life, especially for those in positions of power. By reflecting on the Quranic examples and teachings, Muslims are reminded of the need to prioritize justice, compassion, and the well-being of society in their intentions and actions. May Allah guide us all to have pure intentions and grant us leaders who govern with righteousness and justice.
