(Ghurar al-Hikam: Contentment And The Contented)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مِنْ شَرَفِ الهِمَّةِ لُزُومُ القَناعَةِ۔
This can be translated as,
Remaining contented is from the noble endeavors.
Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quranic teachings.
The word (himma) "هِمَّةِ" in this Hadith refers to one's aspirations, desires, and determination. It signifies the strength of one's will and the drive to achieve their goals. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that among the noble endeavors that a person can undertake is the commitment to remain contented.
Contentment, or (al-qana'ah) "القَناعَةِ", is a state of satisfaction and acceptance of what Allah has decreed for us. It is the opposite of greed, envy, and constantly desiring more. Contentment is a virtue that brings tranquility to the heart and allows us to appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The importance of contentment is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah knows our capabilities and provides us with what is best for us. Therefore, we should be content with our circumstances, knowing that Allah's wisdom is at work.
In Surah At-Talaq, verse 3, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him.
This verse highlights the importance of relying on Allah and being content with His provisions. When we trust in Allah's plan and have faith in His wisdom, we find contentment in knowing that He will take care of our needs.
The consequences of practicing contentment are profound. By remaining contented, we free ourselves from the shackles of materialism and the constant pursuit of worldly desires. We find peace within ourselves and develop a sense of gratitude for the blessings we have been given. Contentment allows us to focus on our spiritual growth and the pursuit of righteousness, rather than being consumed by the pursuit of material possessions.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, encourages us to prioritize contentment as a noble endeavor. He understood that true success lies not in accumulating wealth and possessions, but in finding contentment and satisfaction in what Allah has provided.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can draw inspiration from the life of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself. Despite his elevated status and immense knowledge, he lived a simple and humble life, always content with what Allah had decreed for him. His contentment was a reflection of his unwavering faith and trust in Allah's plan.
As Muslims, we should strive to emulate the noble qualities of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and make contentment a central part of our lives. We should constantly remind ourselves of the blessings we have been given and be grateful for them. By remaining contented, we can attain inner peace and true success in this life and the hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to cultivate contentment in our hearts and guide us on the path of righteousness. Ameen.
