(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

فِي الذِّكْرِ حَياةُ القُلُوبِ۔

This can be translated as,

In the remembrance of Allah there is life for the hearts.

Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (dhikr) "ذِكْرِ" in this Hadith refers to the remembrance of Allah. Dhikr is a comprehensive term that encompasses various acts of worship, such as recitation of the Quran, glorification of Allah, supplication, and reflection upon His attributes. It is through dhikr that the hearts of believers are revived and find true life.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of dhikr in the Quran. In Surah Al-Ra'd, Allah says, (Quran 13:28)

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.

This verse highlights the connection between faith and the remembrance of Allah. When we engage in dhikr, our hearts are filled with tranquility and assurance.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah states, (Quran 2:152)

And remember Me; I will remember you.

This verse emphasizes the reciprocal nature of dhikr. When we remember Allah, He remembers us in return, showering us with His blessings and mercy. This divine remembrance is what brings life to our hearts, filling them with spiritual vitality and nourishment.

The phrase (life for the hearts) "حَيَاةُ القُلُوبِ" in the Hadith signifies the transformation and rejuvenation that occurs within the hearts of those who engage in sincere and constant remembrance of Allah. Just as physical life is essential for the body, spiritual life is vital for the heart. Without the remembrance of Allah, our hearts become spiritually stagnant and lifeless.

When we immerse ourselves in dhikr, our hearts become attuned to the divine presence. We develop a deep connection with Allah, and our hearts are infused with love, awe, and reverence for Him. This spiritual awakening leads to a profound sense of purpose, contentment, and inner peace.

The consequences of neglecting the remembrance of Allah are evident in our daily lives. When we are distant from Allah, our hearts become susceptible to the distractions and temptations of this world. We may find ourselves engrossed in material pursuits, seeking fulfillment in worldly pleasures that ultimately leave us empty and dissatisfied. Our hearts yearn for something more, and that void can only be filled through the remembrance of Allah.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the profound impact of dhikr on our hearts. Through his own example, he demonstrated the power of constant remembrance of Allah in attaining spiritual enlightenment and guidance.

As Muslims, we are encouraged to incorporate dhikr into our daily lives. We can recite the Quran, engage in supplications, glorify Allah's name, and reflect upon His attributes. By doing so, we revive our hearts and strengthen our connection with the Divine. Dhikr serves as a means of purification, elevating our souls and guiding us towards righteousness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the profound impact of the remembrance of Allah on our hearts. Through dhikr, our hearts find true life, becoming filled with tranquility, purpose, and spiritual vitality. Let us strive to make dhikr a constant presence in our lives, seeking closeness to Allah and experiencing the transformative power of His remembrance. May Allah grant us the ability to remember Him constantly and revive our hearts through His divine remembrance.
