(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Truth)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ نَصَرَ الحَقَّ غَنِمَ۔

This can be translated as,

Whoever helps the truth, benefits.

In this beautiful saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance and rewards of supporting and upholding the truth.

Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (nasara) "نَصَرَ" means to aid, assist, or support. It implies actively standing up for the truth and defending it against falsehood. The word (al-haqq) "الحَقَّ" refers to the truth, which is an essential attribute of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encompasses the divine guidance, moral principles, and the teachings of Islam.

To comprehend the beautiful message of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of upholding the truth in several verses. In Surah Al-Tawbah, Allah says, (Quran 9:32)

They desire to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah refuses except to perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it.

This verse highlights the constant struggle between truth and falsehood. Those who support the truth are like the bearers of Allah's light, while the disbelievers seek to extinguish it. By aiding the truth, Muslims become the means through which Allah's light shines in the world, dispelling darkness and ignorance.

Another verse that supports the message of the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Asr, where Allah says, (Quran 103:1-3)

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse emphasizes the importance of not only believing in the truth but also actively advising and supporting it. Muslims are encouraged to enjoin one another in truth and righteousness, reminding each other of their obligations and responsibilities. By doing so, they not only benefit themselves but also contribute to the betterment of society.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder of the rewards and blessings that await those who actively support the truth. By aiding the truth, Muslims align themselves with the divine purpose and become agents of positive change in the world. They become the means through which Allah's light is upheld and spread, leading to the betterment of individuals and society as a whole.

The consequences of supporting the truth are far-reaching. By standing up for justice, Muslims contribute to the establishment of a just and equitable society. They become a source of inspiration for others, motivating them to follow the path of truth and righteousness. Moreover, by aiding the truth, Muslims strengthen their own faith and connection with Allah, as they align themselves with His divine attributes.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of actively seeking and supporting the truth in our lives. It is not enough to merely believe in the truth; we must strive to uphold it in our actions, words, and interactions. By doing so, we not only benefit ourselves but also contribute to the betterment of our communities and the world at large.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to always support and uphold the truth. May He guide us to be beacons of light in a world filled with darkness. And may He bless us with the rewards and benefits that come from aiding the truth.
