إذا أحْبَبْتَ فَلا تُكْثِرُ۔
When you love [something or someone] then do not be excessive [in your love].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Affection And Friendship)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
When you love [something or someone], then do not be excessive [in your love].
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (ahbabta) "أحببت" in the Hadith is derived from the root word (hubb) "حب", which means love. Love is a natural emotion that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has instilled within the hearts of His creation. It is a powerful feeling that can drive individuals to great lengths. However, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us not to be excessive in our love.
To understand the wisdom behind this advice, we can turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:32),
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
This verse highlights the importance of moderation in fulfilling our desires. Excessive love, especially when directed towards something or someone that is not permissible, can lead to immoral actions and deviation from the straight path.
Additionally, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Hadid (57:23) about the dangers of excessive attachment to worldly possessions. He says,
So that you not despair over what has eluded you and not exult [in pride] over what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
This verse emphasizes the need for balance and contentment in our love for material possessions. Excessive attachment to worldly belongings can lead to arrogance, ingratitude, and a neglect of our spiritual growth.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further advises us to avoid being excessive in our love. This guidance is rooted in the understanding that excessive love can blind us from the truth and lead us astray. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Anfal (8:24) that our love for Him and His Messenger (ﷺ) should surpass any other love. He says,
O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.
When we become excessively attached to worldly desires, relationships, or material possessions, we risk compromising our faith and deviating from the path of righteousness. Our love for Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) should always take precedence over any other love. It is through this prioritization that we can maintain balance, avoid excesses, and remain steadfast in our faith.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to exercise moderation in our love. By avoiding excessive attachment to worldly desires and prioritizing our love for Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), we can safeguard our faith and maintain a balanced approach to life. Let us reflect upon this profound guidance and strive to implement it in our daily lives as Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to love in moderation and guide us on the straight path.
