(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sincerity And Devotion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The goal of sincerity is [attaining] deliverance [from the punishment of Allah].

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of sincerity in our actions and intentions as it leads to salvation and protection from the punishment of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ikhlas) "إخْلاص" refers to sincerity or purity of intention. It signifies the act of performing actions solely for the sake of Allah, without any ulterior motives or seeking the approval of others. The word (al-khalaas) "الخَلاص" means deliverance or salvation, indicating the ultimate goal that can be achieved through sincerity.

The concept of sincerity is emphasized in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Unquestionably, for Allah is the pure religion. And those who take protectors besides Him [say], 'We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position.' Indeed, Allah will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allah does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever.

This verse highlights the importance of sincerity in worship, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the only one deserving of our worship. Those who associate partners with Allah, seeking to gain closeness to Him through intermediaries, are misguided. This emphasizes the need for sincerity in our worship and the rejection of any form of shirk (associating partners with Allah).

Another verse that supports the significance of sincerity is found in Surah Al-Bayyinah (98:5), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.

This verse highlights that the commandment given to the believers is to worship Allah alone, with sincerity in their hearts. Sincerity is an essential aspect of the correct religion, along with establishing prayer and giving zakah (charity). It emphasizes that sincerity is not only important in our acts of worship, but it should also permeate every aspect of our lives.

Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The goal of sincerity is deliverance from the punishment of Allah. When we perform our actions with sincerity, solely seeking the pleasure of Allah, we are protected from His punishment. Sincerity acts as a shield, guarding us from the consequences of our sins and shortcomings.

Sincerity in our worship and deeds motivates us to strive for excellence and righteousness. It instills in us a sense of accountability and responsibility, as we are aware that our actions are solely for the sake of Allah. This awareness drives us to constantly improve ourselves, seeking His pleasure and avoiding His displeasure.

Conversely, insincerity in our actions can have severe consequences. In Surah Al-Munafiqun (63:1-2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muhammad], they say, 'We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah.' And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars. They have taken their oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allah. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.

This verse highlights the hypocrisy of those who claim to believe but lack sincerity in their actions. They use their oaths and declarations as a facade to deceive others, while their true intentions are far from the path of Allah. Such insincerity not only leads to their own downfall but also misguides others, causing harm and spreading corruption.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of sincerity in our actions and intentions. Sincerity acts as a means of deliverance from the punishment of Allah. It is a quality that should permeate every aspect of our lives, guiding our worship and deeds. By striving to be sincere in all that we do, we can attain salvation and protection from the consequences of our sins. May Allah grant us the ability to be sincere in all our actions and intentions, and may He guide us on the path of righteousness.
