مَنْ غَلَبَ هَواهُ عَلى عَقْلِهِ ظَهَرَتْ عَلَيْهِ الفَضائِحُ۔
One whose vain desire overpowers his intellect is overcome by disgrace.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ غَلَبَ هَواهُ عَلى عَقْلِهِ ظَهَرَتْ عَلَيْهِ الفَضائِحُ۔
This Hadith highlights the consequences of allowing one's vain desires to overpower their intellect. When a person succumbs to their base desires and allows them to dominate their rational thinking, they become exposed to disgrace and humiliation.
To understand the wise message of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. (ghalaba) "غَلَبَ" means to overpower or prevail over something. (hawah) "هَوَاهُ" refers to vain desires or whims, which are often driven by worldly temptations and personal inclinations. (aqlihi) "عَقْلِهِ" signifies intellect or rational thinking. And (fadaa'ih) "فَضَائِحُ" refers to disgrace or shameful acts.
This Hadith resonates with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of controlling one's desires and following the guidance of intellect. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Yusuf (12:53),
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.
This verse acknowledges the inherent inclination of the human soul towards evil desires, and the need for divine mercy to overcome them.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against following one's desires, stating,
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance from Allah and not allowing our desires to lead us astray.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to exercise self-control and to prioritize rational thinking over impulsive desires. When we let our desires dictate our actions, we become vulnerable to committing disgraceful acts that go against the teachings of Islam. These acts can range from lying, cheating, and indulging in forbidden pleasures to engaging in immoral behavior that harms ourselves and others.
The consequences of succumbing to our vain desires are not limited to this world alone. In the Hereafter, those who allowed their desires to overpower their intellect will face the consequences of their actions. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns in Surah Al-Qiyamah (75:14-15),
No! But man desires to continue in sin. He asks, 'When is the Day of Resurrection?'
Reflecting on this Hadith, we must strive to develop self-discipline and strengthen our intellect through seeking knowledge and understanding the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can resist the temptations of our vain desires and make decisions that are in line with the principles of righteousness and morality. This will not only protect us from disgrace and humiliation in this world but also ensure our success in the Hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to exercise self-control and prioritize rational thinking over impulsive desires. By doing so, we can avoid the disgrace and humiliation that comes from succumbing to our base desires. Let us strive to strengthen our intellect and seek guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to overcome our vain desires and lead a life that is pleasing to Him. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to overcome our desires and protect us from disgrace.
