Hadith #5857

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his family, his companions, and the righteous successors.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

المُصيبَةُ بِالدّينِ أعْظَمُ المَصائِبِ۔

This can be translated as,

Hardship in religion is the greatest of hardships.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The term "مُصيبَةُ" refers to a calamity or a hardship that befalls a person. It can be physical, emotional, or spiritual in nature. The word "بِالدّينِ" refers to religion or faith. It encompasses all aspects of religious beliefs, practices, and values. Finally, the word "أعْظَمُ" means the greatest or the most severe.

To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...

This verse reminds us that Allah is aware of our capabilities and does not impose hardships upon us that we cannot endure. However, when it comes to hardships in matters of faith, they can indeed be the most challenging and overwhelming.

In Surah Al-Hajj (22:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And among the people is he who worships Allah on an edge. If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by trial, he turns on his face [to the other direction]. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss.

This verse highlights the importance of steadfastness in faith, even in the face of hardships. It warns against those who are easily swayed by the trials of life and abandon their commitment to Allah.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that hardships in matters of religion are the most significant challenges we may face. These difficulties can manifest in various forms, such as persecution, societal pressure, or internal struggles.
