شَرُّ النّاسِ مَنْ يَتَّقيهِ النّاسُ مَخافَةَ شَرِّهِ۔
The worst person is one whom people are cautious about out of fear of his evil.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: People)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The worst person is one whom people are cautious about out of fear of his evil.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this statement and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (sharr) "شَرُّ" in this hadith refers to evil or harm. It encompasses all forms of negativity, wickedness, and malevolence. The word (yattaqīhi) "يَتَّقيهِ" means to be cautious or fearful of someone. It implies that people are wary of this individual due to the potential harm or mischief they may cause.
To understand the gravity of this statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the consequences of evil actions and the importance of righteousness. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 4:123)
And whoever earns evil, will be recompensed for it. And he will not find besides Allah any protector or helper.
This verse emphasizes that those who engage in evil deeds will face the consequences of their actions. They will find no refuge or support from Allah or anyone else. Similarly, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah says, (Quran 6:152)
And do not approach the orphan's property except in a way that is best until he reaches maturity. And give full measure and weight in justice. We do not charge any soul except [with that within] its capacity. And when you testify, be just, even if [it concerns] a near relative. And the covenant of Allah fulfill. This has He instructed you that you may remember.
This verse highlights the importance of justice and fairness in our dealings with others. It reminds us that we should not take advantage of anyone, especially the vulnerable, and that we should fulfill our obligations and commitments. Those who disregard these principles and engage in harmful actions will be held accountable.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a powerful reminder for us as Muslims. It urges us to be mindful of our actions and the impact they have on others. It cautions us against becoming individuals who are feared due to our potential to cause harm.
The worst person, as described by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), is one who instills fear and caution in others because of their evil intentions and actions. This individual is a source of negativity and harm, creating an environment of mistrust and unease.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and his words carry great weight. His statement serves as a reminder for us to strive for righteousness and to avoid actions that may harm others. It encourages us to be individuals who inspire trust, respect, and peace.
As Muslims, we should reflect on this hadith and assess our own behavior. Are we individuals who bring about goodness and positivity, or do our actions instill fear and caution in others? Let us strive to be individuals who are known for their kindness, compassion, and integrity, and who inspire others to do the same.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the path of righteousness and protect us from becoming individuals who are feared due to our evil actions. May He grant us the wisdom to understand the gravity of our actions and the strength to always choose what is right. Ameen.
