اَلْكَيِّسُ مَنْ قَصَُّرَ آمالَُهُ۔
The sagacious person is one who shortens his hopes.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Sagacious)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الكيس من قصر آماله
which translates to
The sagacious person is one who shortens his hopes.
In this thought-provoking saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the wisdom and prudence of an individual who does not excessively rely on worldly desires and ambitions.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and their implications. The term (al-kays) "الكيس" refers to a person who possesses wisdom, intelligence, and foresight. This individual is not merely intelligent in a worldly sense, but also possesses deep spiritual insight and understanding. The word (qasr) "قصر" means to shorten or limit. It implies that the sagacious person is one who restricts or curtails their desires and aspirations, recognizing the transient nature of worldly pursuits.
This teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) finds resonance in the Quranic verses that emphasize the importance of detachment from worldly desires and the pursuit of eternal rewards. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 200:
And when you have completed your rites, remember Allah like your [previous] remembrance of your fathers or with [much] greater remembrance. And among the people is he who says, 'Our Lord, give us in this world,' and he will have in the Hereafter no share.
This verse reminds us that while it is natural to seek blessings in this world, we must not lose sight of the ultimate goal of attaining success in the Hereafter.
Another verse that aligns with the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 60:
But whoever comes to Him as a believer having done righteous deeds - for those will be the highest degrees [in position].
This verse emphasizes the importance of righteous actions and faith in attaining the highest ranks in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encourages Muslims to focus on their deeds and spiritual growth rather than being solely preoccupied with worldly ambitions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual journey over worldly pursuits. By shortening our hopes, we are encouraged to detach ourselves from excessive material desires and instead focus on nurturing our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This does not mean that we should abandon our responsibilities or neglect our worldly affairs, but rather that we should approach them with a balanced perspective, recognizing that true success lies in the Hereafter.
When we limit our hopes and desires, we free ourselves from the constant pursuit of worldly pleasures and accolades. This liberation allows us to invest our time and energy in acts of worship, seeking knowledge, and fulfilling our obligations towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and our fellow human beings. By focusing on the eternal rewards promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we develop a sense of contentment and inner peace that transcends the fleeting nature of worldly achievements.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound wisdom and knowledge, exemplified this teaching in his own life. Despite his immense capabilities and accomplishments, he remained detached from worldly desires and always prioritized his spiritual journey. His unwavering devotion to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and his commitment to justice and righteousness serve as an inspiration for Muslims to follow in his footsteps.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of shortening our hopes and desires in order to focus on our spiritual growth and the pursuit of eternal rewards. By recognizing the transient nature of worldly pursuits, we can attain a sense of contentment and inner peace that comes from aligning ourselves with the teachings of the Quran. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to prioritize our spiritual journey and guide us on the path of righteousness.
