How close is peace of mind to hardship [and discomfort]!

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Peace Of Mind)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

ما أقْرَبَ الرَّاحَةَ مِنَ التَّعَبِ۔

This can be translated as,

How close is peace of mind to hardship [and discomfort]!

In this wise utterance, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the close relationship between attaining peace of mind and enduring hardships.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words used. The word (raha) "راحة" refers to peace, tranquility, or ease of mind. It signifies a state of inner calmness and contentment. On the other hand, the word (ta'ab) "تعب" refers to hardship, fatigue, or discomfort. It represents the challenges and difficulties that one may face in life.

This Hadith resonates with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasizes the concept of trials and tribulations as a means of attaining spiritual growth and inner peace. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155),

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse reminds us that hardships are an inevitable part of life, and they serve as a test of our patience and faith.

Furthermore, in Surah Ash-Sharh (94:5-6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.

This repetition emphasizes the certainty that after every difficulty, there is relief and ease. It is through facing and overcoming challenges that we can truly appreciate and experience peace of mind.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) draws our attention to the close proximity between peace of mind and hardships. This proximity can be understood in several ways. Firstly, enduring hardships can lead to the development of resilience, patience, and gratitude. When we face difficulties with a positive mindset and rely on Allah's guidance, we cultivate inner strength and find solace in knowing that our struggles have a purpose.

Secondly, peace of mind can be attained by accepting and embracing the trials that come our way. Instead of resisting or resenting the challenges, we can choose to view them as opportunities for growth and self-improvement. This mindset shift allows us to find peace even in the midst of adversity.

Moreover, the close relationship between peace of mind and hardships can be seen in the contrast between the two states. Just as darkness highlights the beauty of light, experiencing hardships can make us appreciate the moments of tranquility and contentment even more. The contrast between the two states enhances our understanding and gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon us.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the intertwined nature of peace of mind and hardships. It teaches us that true peace is not the absence of difficulties, but rather the ability to find serenity and contentment amidst the challenges of life. By embracing hardships with patience, gratitude, and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we can attain a profound sense of peace that transcends the temporary discomforts we may face. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to navigate through hardships and find lasting peace of mind.
