(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

أقْلِلِ الكَلامَ، تَأمَنِ المَلامَ۔

This Hadith can be translated into English as,

Reduce [your] speech and you will be safe from blame.

Let us delve into the profound wisdom behind this statement and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (aqillil) "أقْلِلِ" in the Hadith means to decrease or reduce. It emphasizes the importance of controlling our speech and not indulging in excessive or unnecessary talk. By restraining our tongues, we can avoid many problems and protect ourselves from blame or criticism.

The Quran also emphasizes the significance of guarding our speech. In Surah Al-Isra, verse 36, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

This verse reminds us to be cautious about what we say, as we will be held accountable for our words. Speaking without knowledge can lead to spreading falsehoods, causing harm, and inviting blame upon ourselves.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qalam, verse 10, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises Prophet Muhammad (), saying,

And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance.

This verse teaches us the importance of patience and forbearance in the face of criticism or negative speech. It encourages us to respond to harsh words with kindness and to distance ourselves from those who engage in futile arguments or slander. By doing so, we can maintain our integrity and protect ourselves from blame.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the power of silence and the virtue of speaking only when necessary. It encourages us to reflect on the consequences of our words before uttering them. By reducing our speech, we can avoid misunderstandings, conflicts, and unnecessary disputes. Our words have the potential to shape our relationships and impact the lives of others. Therefore, it is crucial to choose our words wisely and speak with sincerity and truthfulness.

Reducing our speech also allows us to focus on listening and understanding others. In Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 6, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information before passing judgment or spreading rumors. By listening attentively and seeking knowledge, we can avoid causing harm to others and protect ourselves from blame.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),

Reduce [your] speech and you will be safe from blame,

serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their words. It urges us to control our tongues, speak with wisdom and knowledge, and avoid unnecessary arguments and disputes. By doing so, we can maintain harmonious relationships, protect ourselves from blame, and strive to attain the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the wisdom to speak with restraint and guide us on the path of righteousness.
