— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Those who are pleased with this world are destroyed on the Day of Resurrection and those who are disheartened by it are saved.

This enlightening Hadith highlights the importance of having a balanced perspective towards the material world and its temporary pleasures.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (halaka) "هَلَكَ" means to be destroyed or ruined, while (farahoon) "فَرِحُونَ" refers to those who are pleased or delighted. On the other hand, (naja) "نَجَا" means to be saved or delivered, and (mahzoonoon) "مَحْزُونُونَ" refers to those who are disheartened or saddened.

To comprehend the wisdom behind this Hadith, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly warns against becoming attached to the fleeting pleasures of this world. For instance, in Surah Al-Imran (3:185), Allah says,

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

Here, Allah reminds us that the true reward and compensation for our actions will be given on the Day of Resurrection. The pleasures and attractions of this world are merely illusory and temporary. Those who are solely focused on worldly gains and pleasures will find themselves in a state of ruin and regret on the Day of Judgment.

In contrast, those who are disheartened by the allure of this world and prioritize their spiritual growth and connection with Allah will be saved. In Surah Al-Ankabut (29:64), Allah says,

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.

This verse emphasizes that the true life lies in the Hereafter, and this worldly life is merely a temporary diversion. Those who recognize this reality and detach themselves from the materialistic pursuits of this world will find salvation and eternal bliss.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the consequences of being attached to this world. Those who are pleased with the transitory pleasures and possessions of this world will be consumed by their desires and ultimately face destruction on the Day of Resurrection. Their attachment to worldly gains will blind them from the true purpose of life and lead them astray.

Conversely, those who are disheartened by the temptations and distractions of this world will prioritize their spiritual growth and seek closeness to Allah. They will understand the fleeting nature of worldly pleasures and focus on the eternal rewards of the Hereafter. Their detachment from the materialistic aspects of this world will lead to their salvation and eternal success.

This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strike a balance between their worldly responsibilities and their spiritual journey. While it is essential to fulfill our obligations and enjoy the permissible blessings of this world, we must not become attached to them. We should always prioritize our relationship with Allah and strive for the eternal rewards of the Hereafter.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns against being pleased with the temporary pleasures of this world, as it leads to destruction on the Day of Resurrection. Conversely, those who are disheartened by the allure of this world and prioritize their spiritual growth will be saved. May Allah grant us the wisdom to strike a balance in our lives and prioritize our eternal success over temporary gains.
