عَلى قَدْرِ المَؤُنَةِ تَكُونُ مِنَ اللّهِ المَعُونَةُ۔
To the extent of the need, there is succour from Allah.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Succor)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
عَلى قَدْرِ المَؤُنَةِ تَكُونُ مِنَ اللّهِ المَعُونَةُ۔
This can be translated as,
To the extent of the need, there is succour from Allah.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
Firstly, it is important to understand the key words in this Hadith. (mu'una) "مَؤُنَةِ" refers to the need or requirement, while (ma'una) "مَعُونَةُ" signifies succour or assistance. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the divine support and aid that is granted by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in accordance with our needs and requirements.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the concept of seeking help and support from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in times of need. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 45, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah].
This verse highlights the importance of seeking assistance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through patience and prayer, especially during challenging times.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Fatiha, verse 5, we recite in our daily prayers,
You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.
This verse reminds us that true worship is directed solely towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and it is only Him that we should turn to for assistance and support.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the level of divine assistance we receive is directly proportional to our need and reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we recognize our dependency on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek His help sincerely, He grants us the necessary support and guidance to overcome our challenges.
For example, if we find ourselves in a difficult financial situation, we should turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in prayer and seek His assistance. By acknowledging our need and placing our trust in Him, we open the doors for divine intervention and provision. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) may guide us towards opportunities, bless our efforts, or provide unexpected sources of sustenance.
Similarly, in times of emotional distress or hardship, we should seek solace in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and rely on His support. By turning to Him in prayer, reciting His words, and seeking His guidance, we can find comfort and strength to navigate through the challenges we face.
It is important to note that seeking assistance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not mean that we should neglect taking practical steps to address our needs. Rather, it is a reminder that true success lies in recognizing our reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seeking His help alongside our efforts.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) provides succour and assistance in accordance with our needs and reliance on Him. By recognizing our dependency on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seeking His help sincerely, we open the doors for divine support and guidance. Let us remember to turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in times of need, placing our trust in Him and seeking His assistance through prayer, patience, and reliance on His divine wisdom. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the understanding and ability to seek His help in all aspects of our lives.
