مَنْ شَكَرَ المَعْرُوفَ، فَقَدْ قَضى حَقَّهُ۔
One who shows gratitude for [and act of] kindness has indeed fulfilled its right.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Gratitude And The Grateful)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who shows gratitude for [and act of] kindness has indeed fulfilled its right.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of expressing gratitude for any act of kindness that is done towards us. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (shakara) "شَكَرَ" in Arabic, which is translated as "shows gratitude," carries a essence. It encompasses acknowledging and appreciating the kindness or favor that has been bestowed upon us. Gratitude is not merely a verbal expression, but it should be accompanied by a genuine feeling of thankfulness in our hearts. It is an act of recognizing the value and significance of the favor and expressing our appreciation to the one who has done it.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of gratitude in the Quran. In Surah Ibrahim, Allah says, (Quran 14:7)
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse highlights the direct correlation between gratitude and an increase in blessings from Allah. When we express gratitude for the favors bestowed upon us, Allah promises to increase those blessings.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Naml, Allah says, (Quran 27:19)
And [Solomon] smiled, amused at her speech, and said, 'My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You approve. And admit me by Your mercy into [the ranks of] Your righteous servants.'
Here, Prophet Solomon (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) acknowledges the favor of Allah and seeks His guidance to be grateful for it. This verse teaches us that gratitude should extend not only to the person who has shown us kindness but also to Allah, who is the ultimate source of all blessings.
Now, let us reflect on the consequences and motivations behind fulfilling the right of gratitude. When we express gratitude for an act of kindness, it not only brings joy to the heart of the person who has done the favor but also strengthens the bond of love and brotherhood among Muslims. Gratitude fosters a culture of appreciation and encourages others to continue performing acts of kindness. It creates a positive and harmonious environment within the community.
Moreover, fulfilling the right of gratitude has a transformative effect on our own souls. It cultivates humility, contentment, and a sense of appreciation for the blessings we have been granted. Gratitude helps us recognize the countless favors bestowed upon us by Allah and encourages us to use those blessings in a manner that pleases Him. It serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and valuing the good deeds of others, which in turn motivates us to reciprocate their kindness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that showing gratitude for acts of kindness is not only a moral obligation but also a means of fulfilling the right of the favor. Gratitude is a powerful tool that strengthens our relationship with Allah and our fellow Muslims. It brings about an increase in blessings, fosters a culture of appreciation, and transforms our own souls. Let us strive to be grateful for every act of kindness, big or small, and fulfill the right of gratitude in our lives as true Muslims. May Allah guide us all on the path of gratitude and righteousness.
