It is not for the intelligent one to move out [of his home] except for three things: to do something to improve his Hereafter, or to earn his livelihood, or to enjoy what is not forbidden.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of wisdom and intelligence in the actions and decisions of a believer. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

It is not for the intelligent one to move out [of his home] except for three things: to do something to improve his Hereafter, or to earn his livelihood, or to enjoy what is not forbidden.

Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith. The word (shaakhisan) "شاخِصاً" refers to someone who moves out of their home, indicating that they are actively engaging in the world outside. The word (huzwah) "حُظْوَة" means a step or movement. (marammah) "مَرَمَّة" refers to earning a livelihood or sustenance. And (ladhdhah) "لَذَّة" signifies the enjoyment of something pleasurable.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197),

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse highlights the importance of prioritizing the Hereafter and seeking provisions for our worldly needs with the consciousness of Allah.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world.

This verse emphasizes the balance between striving for the Hereafter while also fulfilling our worldly responsibilities.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith further elaborates on these Quranic teachings. The first reason he mentions for leaving one's home is to

do something to improve his Hereafter.

This encompasses all acts of worship, seeking knowledge, performing good deeds, and striving to attain a higher spiritual rank. It reminds us that our primary focus should be on actions that will benefit us in the eternal life to come.

The second reason mentioned is to "earn his livelihood." This highlights the importance of fulfilling our worldly responsibilities and providing for ourselves and our families. It encourages Muslims to engage in lawful means of earning a living, ensuring that our sustenance is acquired through honest and ethical means. This aligns with the Quranic principle of seeking provisions while maintaining Taqwa.

The third reason given by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is to

enjoy what is not forbidden.

This refers to engaging in permissible recreational activities and enjoying the blessings of this world within the boundaries set by Allah. Islam does not advocate for a life of asceticism; rather, it encourages a balanced approach where believers can find joy and pleasure in permissible activities, as long as they do not transgress the limits set by Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a comprehensive guide for Muslims, reminding us to prioritize our Hereafter, fulfill our worldly responsibilities, and find joy within the boundaries of Islam. It encourages us to be intelligent and wise in our actions, always seeking the pleasure of Allah and striving for a balanced and fulfilling life.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the understanding and wisdom to implement the teachings of this Hadith in our lives. May He bless us with success in this world and the Hereafter. And may peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
