أيْنَ الَّذينَ أخْلَصُوا أعْمالَهُمْ لِلّهِ، وطَهَّرُوا قُلُوبَهُمْ بِمَواضِعِ ذِكْرِ (نَظَرِ) اللّهِ؟!
Where are those who make their actions sincere for Allah and purify their hearts by the remembrance of Allah?!
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) poses a thought-provoking question to all Muslims:
Where are those who make their actions sincere for Allah and purify their hearts by the remembrance of Allah?!
This question serves as a reminder and a call to action for all believers to reflect upon the sincerity of their actions and the state of their hearts.
Let us delve into the key words of this hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The first important word is (akhlasoo) "أخْلَصُوا", which means to make something sincere or pure. It implies that our actions should be solely dedicated to pleasing Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seeking His pleasure. This requires us to constantly examine our intentions and ensure that they are solely for the sake of Allah.
The second significant word is (tahharoo) "طَهَّرُوا", which means to purify. In this context, it refers to purifying our hearts. The heart is the center of our spiritual being, and it is essential to keep it free from impurities such as arrogance, envy, and hatred. The remembrance of Allah (ذِكْرِ اللّهِ) is a powerful tool to cleanse our hearts and maintain a strong connection with our Creator.
To further understand the importance of sincerity and purifying our hearts, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:84-89):
Say, 'To whom belongs the earth and whoever is in it, if you should know?' They will say, 'To Allah.' Say, 'Then will you not remember?' Say, 'Who is Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Great Throne?' They will say, 'They belong to Allah.' Say, 'Then will you not fear Him?' Say, 'In whose hand is the realm of all things - and He protects while none can protect against Him - if you should know?' They will say, 'All [belongs] to Allah.' Say, 'Then how are you deluded?' Rather, We have brought them the truth, and indeed they are liars.
These verses highlight the importance of recognizing Allah's sovereignty over all things and constantly remembering Him. It is through this remembrance that we can attain sincerity in our actions and purify our hearts. When we acknowledge that everything belongs to Allah and seek His pleasure, our actions become dedicated solely to Him.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is urging us to reflect on the state of our hearts and the sincerity of our actions. He is reminding us that true success lies in making our actions solely for the sake of Allah and purifying our hearts through His remembrance. By doing so, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the example set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt.
The consequences of sincerely dedicating our actions to Allah and purifying our hearts are immense. It leads to a deep sense of spiritual fulfillment, inner peace, and a stronger connection with our Creator. It also enables us to navigate the challenges of life with patience, gratitude, and humility. Moreover, it strengthens our relationship with fellow Muslims, as sincerity and purity of heart foster unity, compassion, and empathy.
Let us reflect upon this profound hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to make our actions sincere for Allah and purify our hearts through His remembrance. May Allah guide us all on the path of sincerity and grant us the ability to purify our hearts. Ameen.
