— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Consultation And Deliberation)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اَلاِسْتِشارَةُ عَيْنُ الهِدايَةِ۔" This can be translated as,

Seeking advice is the essence [and source] of guidance.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its implications in the light of the Quran.

The word (istishara) "اَلاِسْتِشارَةُ" refers to seeking advice or consultation. It implies the act of seeking guidance and counsel from others before making a decision. This word emphasizes the importance of involving others in the decision-making process, as it recognizes the value of diverse perspectives and collective wisdom.

The term (ayn) "عَيْنُ" means the essence or source. It signifies that seeking advice is not merely a superficial act, but rather the very core and foundation of guidance. It highlights the fact that seeking advice is not a sign of weakness, but rather a strength that leads to better decision-making and ultimately, guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the concept of seeking advice and consultation. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:159)

And consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking counsel from others before making a decision, while also reminding us to put our trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) after seeking advice.

Another verse that supports the concept of seeking advice is found in Surah Ash-Shura, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 42:38)

And those who have responded to their lord and established prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them, they spend.

This verse highlights the importance of consultation among believers and the positive outcomes that arise from it.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes the significance of seeking advice in all aspects of our lives. Whether it is personal matters, family decisions, or community affairs, seeking advice from knowledgeable and trustworthy individuals is crucial. By doing so, we open ourselves up to different perspectives, insights, and experiences, which can lead to more informed and balanced decisions.

Moreover, seeking advice aligns with the teachings of Islam, which encourages mutual consultation and cooperation within the Muslim community. It fosters unity, strengthens relationships, and promotes a sense of collective responsibility. By seeking advice, we acknowledge that we are not alone in our journey and that we can benefit from the wisdom and guidance of others.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that seeking advice is not a sign of weakness, but rather a means to attain guidance and make better decisions. It emphasizes the importance of involving others in our decision-making process and recognizing the value of diverse perspectives. By seeking advice, we tap into the collective wisdom of the ummah and increase our chances of making choices that are pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to seek advice when needed and bless us with guidance in all our affairs.
