كَفى بالْعِلْمِ رِفْعَةً۔
Knowledge is sufficient as loftiness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "كَفَى بِالْعِلْمِ رِفْعَةً۔" This can be translated as,
Knowledge is sufficient as loftiness.
In this profound statement, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense value and significance of knowledge in elevating an individual's status and character.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ilm) "عِلْمِ" refers to knowledge, encompassing both religious and worldly knowledge. It includes the understanding of religious teachings, the sciences, arts, and all forms of beneficial knowledge. The word (rif'ah) "رِفْعَةً" denotes loftiness, elevation, and honor. It signifies the elevation of one's status, both in this world and in the hereafter.
To comprehend the significance of knowledge, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge. In Surah Al-Zumar, verse 9, Allah says,
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It emphasizes that those who possess knowledge are elevated in their understanding and remembrance of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila, verse 11, Allah states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse emphasizes that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah. It highlights that those who possess knowledge will be raised in ranks and rewarded accordingly.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,
Knowledge is sufficient as loftiness,
holds profound implications. It signifies that knowledge alone is enough to elevate an individual's status and character. It implies that through the acquisition and application of knowledge, one can attain a position of honor and distinction.
When we reflect upon this Hadith, we realize that knowledge has the power to transform individuals and societies. It empowers individuals to make informed decisions, seek truth, and contribute positively to their communities. Knowledge enables us to understand the teachings of Islam, strengthen our faith, and fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims.
Moreover, knowledge serves as a guiding light in our lives. It helps us distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood. It enables us to navigate the complexities of the modern world and make choices that align with our values and principles.
The consequences of neglecting knowledge are evident in our societies today. Ignorance breeds intolerance, prejudice, and injustice. Lack of knowledge leads to misunderstandings, divisions, and conflicts. By emphasizing the importance of knowledge, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the dire need to seek knowledge, promote education, and cultivate a culture of learning within our communities.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
Knowledge is sufficient as loftiness
serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of knowledge in our lives. It highlights that knowledge is not merely a means of personal growth, but a path towards elevation and honor. As Muslims, we are encouraged to seek knowledge, both religious and worldly, and utilize it to better ourselves and society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and benefit from it in this world and the hereafter.
